JOTTINGH FROM PROVINCIAL CENTRES. (From Our Special Correspondents) NAPIER. • The Eastings Chamber of CominCrco has written to the General Manager of Railways, asking him to accelerate the train service between Hastings and Napier, so that the journey may be made in thirty, instead of forty, minutes, as at. present. Mr. A, Anderson, of Christchurch, is visiting Napier. Mr. \V. U. Gould, of Auckland, arrived in Hastings yesterday. Professor Prince, Canadian Fisheries Export, is expected to-arrive in Napier to-morrow, and will bo waited on by a deputation from the Hawke's Bay Acclimatisation Society regarding matters of local interest.
A man named Clarence Victor Macarteney lias been arrested at Gisbomo for alleged .theft at Napier. Jlacartcncy was at one time, it id said, a member of a Wellington band. The Napier Borough Council has received nineteen applications for the position of engineer, which carries ' a salary.of £600, and lias selected seven for further consideration, among them being Mr. William Wilson (of Auckland), Mr. F. T. M. JCissell (of Lake Coleridge), Mr. F. P. Talboys (of Wanganui), Mr. J. F. Warren (in cliargo of the Waipori Falls power-station), Mr. A. A. Hastings (of Napier), Mr. H. King (of Wellington). Mr. B. B. Swinburn (of Tauranga), Mr. L. Do R. Du Verge (of Sydney, electrical assistant to the N.S.W. Government railways and tramways). F'ALMERSTON NORTH. The Radium Institute Committee has been advised by the Hawke's Bay Hospital Board that the following have consented to act as a canvassing committee in the Hawke's Bay district:—■ Messrs. W. Slirimpton (chairman of the board), T. M. Chambers (Harclock North), W. Hart (Mayor of Hastings), F. Moeller (Napier). Others wlio have recently Joined the executive, include: Messrs. J. J. Williams (Frimley). Sidney _ Johnston (Takapau), J. Studholme (Taihape). The executiv'o is awaiting, certain information concerning tho requirements of the institute before proceeding with a further appeal to the public. A deed of trust is being prepared by the executive's solicitor, and subscribers will shortly be invited to meet t-o appoint treasurers. As the result of conferences between the masters and the employees in the Manawatu cycle and motor mechanics' trade, the men have agreed to the masters'''wish that the desired award shall apply not to Palinerston only, but to tho Manawatu district. An award will ba sought on l these lines, and a minimum wage of Is. 4-Jd. per hour for all workers over 21 years will lie asked for. The builders', general labourers, and brickworks' employees oil Wednesday evening resolved to form an industrial union and register immediately. The local rainfall for Juno totalled 2.33 inches. This is low, the .Tune average being over 4, but the Juno rainfall last year was still tower. WANCANUf. ■ Councillor G. Spriggcns has been elected Deputy-Mayor of Wanganui. S A movement is on foot hero to form a Non-Commissioned Officers' Club, and as under tho present defence scheme thoro is a much larger number of these ,£}ian in expected to meet with success. Disregard of tra'ffio by-laws led to tho suspension of. two Native taxi-car drivers' licenses by tho Borough Council on Tuesday. ■At the same meeting an applicant with up-to-dato ideas applied for a license to ply for hire with a motor cycle and side-car. The council, however, rofused tho application oil tho recommendation of tho borough engineer, who said _ ho did not consider such a combination safe for hiring purposes. MABTERTON. , Mr! J. S. Tennant, M.A., Principal of the Training College, will deliver an address before tlie Wairarapa branch of the Teachers' Institute on Saturday on the subject of "Play as an Educaiivo Factor." At a meeting of the Citizens' Carnival Committee, a letter was read from the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners, promising assistance in tho erection of buildings, etc. Mr. Hopkins, of Napiet,"wrote stating on what terms he would accept tlie appointment of organiser. Mr. Harry Hall was present by invitation; and made a number of valuable suggestions. Dr. N. H. Prior delivered a lucid nnd interesting address before members of the St. John Ambulance Brigade last night. At the annual meeting of tho Masterton Firo Police and Salvago Corps, a committco was'sot up for the purpose of confering with the File Brigade on the Question of amalgamation. Tho Fire Brigade has also set up 1 a committee, .and Mr. 0. N. C. Pragnell lias been' selected as chairman. News has been received from Wanganui of the death of Mrs. A. C. ScrimKeour, relict of the late Mr. Alexander Scrimgeour, for many years a resident of this town. OTAKI. ■ Tho weather continues cold. In fact, the past few weeks liavo been the coldest recorded hero for some years. There have been slight frosts, and much rain, while sriowhas been prevalent on the bilk. In view of the snap, cows have not been at their best.
Mr. W. M'Kegg, chairman of' the Town Boaid, is at present in Wellington, attending tho conference there. Only one championshin hockey match was played hero, on [Wednesday, the two local teams meeting in combat. Otaki, after playing a mediocre game, defeated. Rahui hy three goals to nil. The. only exciting passage of the play was the ball beiig sent through a large window of a residence.
