THE POULTRY SHOW.
OPENED BY HER EXCELLENCY SOME VERY FINE EXHIBITS The thirty-second annual show of the Wellington Poultry, Pigeon and Canary Society was opened in tho Harbour Board's K Shed yesterday afternoon by tho Countess of Liverpool, while his Worship tho Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) and Mrs. Luke were also present. Her Excelloncy's Remarks. In opening the show, the Countess of Liverpool remarked that it was always a great pleasure to associate herself witii the peoplo of Wellington in, thoir various interests and undertakings, but this day's occasion was an especially pleasant as the poultry industry was one in which sho took tiio keenest/interest. "I am a poultry fancier myself, in a small way," remarked the Countess,, "and have kept poultry for years, and I feel that they are. well worth tho small amount of trouble, that tlioy entail." , _ • The .president of the society, Mr. G. Finn, who also Bpoke, shanked her Excellency for coming to open the show; and expressed his pleasure that tho Conntess of Liverpool was represented amongib tho exhibitors. Mr. Finn added that he was pleased to see that in the poultry section there were 100 more entries than there wore last year, while he was quite sura that the quality of the exhibtis was equal to anything previously shown in tho Dominion.' In Wyandottes especially the exhibits were excellent-; while' in the utility section the'ent ries wero the largest ever recorded in New Zealand. He was pleased to see thpt the fancier and utility men were coming closer together every year, and he was sure that the society would do everything in its power to draw closer this relationship. In concluding his remarks. Mr. Finn announced that on Friday there : would be. a .most interesting exhibition of cats at the' show. An Exoellent Show. Both as to the and quantity of exhibits, the show is regarded its one of the finest collections of birds'ever brought together in Wellington. Tliij is the first occasion on which the so-ciety-has held its annual display in tho Harbour Board building, and although it is removed from the centre of tho town, the ample floor space allows room in plenty for exhibitor and public alike. The arrangement of the various sections is excellent. -
Tho judges of .the poultry section are enthusiastic over the quality of the exhibits. The members of tho N,ew Zealand Wyandottes' Club have entered some of the finest birds here. .Tho white and silver 1 Wyandottes especially are very fine. ",F<)r tho latter type of Wyandotte,' Mr. J. Curry, of Brooklyn, was awarded the £10 10s. Jervois Shield and tho New Zealand championship. Mr. Ourry also won two club specials and tho £5 ss. cup outright for tlie 'third time in succession in the same class; Messrs. Doig and Thomas were also most successful in their Wyandotto exhibits. They ariiiexed the Now Zealand championship, and were successful in the white Wyandotte cockerel soction. They also won-two Wyandotto Club specials and the Points (Shield. The latter is for the most points in any one variety;'of'."rocltcrel. There.- are i'very strong 'exKibits in Mino>rcas,' .Leghorns, Bantams, and Game. The white - Wyandottes, Rocks, and black and buff Orpingtons 'are also well worth inspecting. Both as regards quality and quantity the judges declare tho exhibits of utility birds to be a revelation. Tlie most successful exhibitors in the latter class of white Leghorns are Messrs. Webster and J. Allen, of Brooklyn, and Messrs. Davy and' F. Wallace, of Island Bay. The Bantams form* a most interesting group, and Mr. C. Brattle, of Ngaio, for his blaok rosecomb bird was awarded the Dominion championship. There are some splendid specimens of ducks, particularly in Aylesburys. Mr. J. Reed, of Masterton, figures prominently in the duck exhibits, with his fine collection- '
Turning to the pigeons, it must be admitted tliat they'form a very fine collection. The judge liad considerable difficulty in singling out the bosfc birds, so even was tlie quality of the exhibits. It would be hard to find a better class of homing pigeons, while tho 600-milers arc excellent. Considering the timo of tlie year, all tho birdu are in., very fair condition. The failc.v pigeons are also well worth seeing. Tlie canary exhibits if not strong in number make up in quality. Tlie show will be open all day to-day and Friday.
