The Crimes Amendment Act introduced by the Minister of Justico (the Hon. A. L. Herdman) provides for an important change in the law relating to offences to females. The present law is that'it is no defence to an indictment for an indecent assaulo on a girl under the age of 16 yeare tliat bTio consented to the act of indecency, unlosa she is older , than, or of the same age as, tho person charged. Under Mr. Herdman s Bill it is proposed to make the age of consent 18 years, instead of 16. The Bill also proposes to increase tho maximum punishment to be inflicted on pereons convicted of prave offences against a woman, or girl who is an idiot or imbecile from two years' imprisonment to five years' imprisonment.
