9- — ' MISSIONARY AND EXPLORER.

• Mr. Dan Crawford, F.R.G.S., tho eminent missionary traveller and explorer of Central Africa, visits Wellington from July 10. to 14.' Mr. .Crawford entered South Africa from the Atlantic Ocean when'a youth of 19. He bored his way into the interior to a district- 250 miles beyond the spot, where Livingstone died. There he worked as'missionary, Bible-trans-lator, sanitary reformer, town builder, road-maker,, and all the etceteras of a pioneer for jfirti unbroken stretch of 22 years. Ho; emerged from, the "Long Grass," as. Africa is calM by the African, at the mouth of the ;Zambesi, on; tho Indian Ocean. Ho returned to Europe on an important mission, and there speedily came to fame by the publication of his book • on Africa, "Thinking Black," and by his picturesque, and thrilling addresses. Under tho guidance of Mr. W. R. Moody, of Northfield, he had just concluded a most successful visit to America.

After his New Z'eaTand tour Mr. Crawfora will spend some months in Australia, en route for South Africa. There ho will , rejoin Mrs. Crawford, and together they will 're-enter the "Long Grass" for their second and final tgrm; for Mr. Crawford never intends to return to civilisation.

Mr. Crawford is a pioneer, explorer, and skilled geographer, as well as missionary, and lias been olected a Follow of tie Royal Geographical Society in recognftion of his work of exploration in the regions where tho Nile takes its rise. He is also a_scliolar, and a writer and speakor of distinction. His lectures on Central Africa will give New Zefflander3 a unique opportunity to giih first-hand, knowledge of tho Dark Continent from one who on all lands 'is acknowledged to bo a worthy successor of David Livingstone.
