The worst enemy of the native birds in Australia is the domestic cat that has s,anc wild, according to Mr. Gregory Mathews, the well-known ornithologist. Mr. Mathews told a Sydney interviewer that oats were spreading well over Australia, particularly Western Australia, and had already made serious inroads onsome of the most interesting of the avi fauna. "One of my collectors found cats as far out as Tanami, about SOO miles' from the Western Australian coast.'' Mr. Mathow.s said. "They are orobably taken out from settlements us kittens by blacks, and when they become well grown tlir-v leave tile blacks' camps and take to the bush. In oilier eases cats have been introduced into certain localities by whites in the vain hopo that, they would exterminate rabbits. They grow larger than the house cat. and very loroeious. The fox is a bad enough enemy of the birds, but the • cat is ten times ypirso." j
