Gin. aft, and 7ft.. forward, but the inrush of water, put hoi- down to nearly 17ft. \ ; ■: Tiro signals 'showed 14ft. as the workable depth of tlio barj so Captain llux- ■ toil decided that it would bo unwiso to make a dart for the river and therefore .boaehed the vessel to prevent her foundering. I That the position was serious is shown '■ by the fact that the men in the stokehold wero working up to tho waist in water. : From a v cursory examination made yesterday it would appear that the vessel . is holed considerably amidships in Nos. 1' and 2 holds, /and in tho engine-room tho tide is ebbing and flowing. It is anticipated, that the 'cargo in No'. 4 hold will bo found to be damaged b.y water. ;If tho vessel can bo made tight •exports consider there will be nodiiliculty in getting her off, as she lies in a very protected position. ' The Magisterial inquiry will be held next week. High appreciation has been expressed of tho action of Captain Buxton. .
