SHORTHORN BREEDERS

SOME. CANTERBURY PROPOSALS. IBr T«l«gr*ph.— ¥t«u . Aimclkiob.) Chrlstohureh, Juno 24. A meeting'of'Canterbury Shorthorn breeders was held to-day, Mr. R. K, Alexander presiding.over an attendance of thirteen of the prominent' breeders in Canterbury. In bis introductory remarks the chairman said there had been two associations formed in the .North Island calling themselves' Shorthorn associations, and it seemed'to him that there was an effort being;'made to oust the Canterbury Sliortliorn breeders. Ho thought, they should protest against' this action in. same way or another. Their 'efforts should be purely protective. The -establishment of a Herd Book in the north, which admitted cattle of a nondescript kind would, he feared, tend to spoil the present good outside market for the genuine breed. However, he thought that the. last thing they wanted was a newspaper controversy on the matter, and he proposed that the deliberations of the meeting be taken in committee. Dr. Gow said he approved of the suggestion.- ■ It would be better, in his •opinion, if the. Press representatives withdrew.- A motion was put and carried, and the meeting was held in committee. The Press representatives were informed afterwards that the. following decisions had been arrived at: — (IV -That an A. and P. Association be asked .to publish ■ the aununl milking records'of cows (if desired by the breeders).entered iu the Herd Book." (2) "A sub-committee be appointed to watch' the interests of' the dual purpose Shorthorn." (3) "It was decided to protest to the Agricultural Do-. parcmenV against the spending of publie money ,<yi< testing cows until a definite scheme'of breeding is laid down on authorised'.'lincs.". (4) ."It was de : cided ,to recommend th</ .committee ot the. A. and"F. Association.to makc.it compuisory. that all Shorthorn cattle entered in the purebred classes at shows should be entered or' bo eligible' for entry iii tha. Shorthorn Herd Book','
