FIRES.

' A somewhat serious outbreak of fire- i occurred in. the premises 'of Messrs. bmith and Smith, glaziers and paper.- 1 hangers, in the Octagon this evening. Jho brigade soon got tho firq under control, out considerable damage was acne. The firm carried a heavy stock .[he firo is supposed to have originated "em a gas stovo in tho-office' in tho iniddle flat. The office fittings were extensively damaged, and tho books and strong-room also • suffered severely Stock in the ■middle' flat was damaged etriously by firo and water. It is anticipated that the damago will amount to about £1300. The interior of tho building ' was undergoing, renovation, tho cost of which was expected to run into' about £3000. The stock insured is for £9000, and tho buildine- for ±;250q in tho Standard office. CALL TO M'FARLANE STREET. Fire partly destroyed a wash-house attached to tho residence of Mr. R. C. Homier'nt No. 10 M'Farlane Streot, at 12.20 p.m. yesterday.. It appears that a little boy, aged seven years, was in the wash-lioueo, and tho presumption is that, after lighting α-candlo, ho threw a match into a heap of rubbish. The walls were scorched, and the contents damaged by smoko and water.- Tho extent of tho datnago is estimated at £5. The building' and contents were insured in the New Zealand Insurance office for £800.
