On one side the Socialists, in stern array, threatened to, capture and subordinate the whole of the legislative machinery to their class aims, and the propaganda of one or two of -the large unions to become l political machines threatened tho whole basis of free <*ovcrltmentL On the other side, the Liberals were attempting to secure the Federal Constitution from predatory hands, and restore a free Parliament to a free people, for the wise purpose of free democracy.
