NOTES AND COMMENTS.

[By Gu.xcoe.l The only ; race meeting which will claim attention this week is the Napier Park gathering, which takes place on Wednesday and Thursday. ■ As iit Hastings last week there are four jumping events each day. The Park course takes a lot of jumping and good "tappers," such as Sir Lethe, have a lot in their, favour. In the list of nominations for the Wellington Racing Club's Winter Meeting, published on Saturday, Wild Lupin was omitted from the Stewards' Handicap; Royal Maid, in the July Steeplechase, should be Royal Medal; Merry Valet was omitted from the Corunna Hurdle Handicap. Last year's Grand, National winner, Morning, is an. acceptor in the Settlers' Hack Handicap (sis furlongs) at Napier on Wednesday. Other prominent liorses accepted for aro Day Fly, winner of tho Final Handicap—an open race—at Hastings, and Haumakaka, a winner at Otaki. It is interesting to note that Idealism is an acceptor for the Napier Steeplechase, but Peary has been allowed to drop out. Idealism is big enough to jump country, but so far tho writer has not heard that he has done any schooling over the big fences. Some surpriso was occasioned when it was found that Gondolier had been accepted for in the Napier Steeplechase. It was generally understood that he had broken down badly whilo contesting the Ilawke's Bay Steeplechase last week. Scockade, who was purchased by Mr. F. J. Barton on the second day of the Otaki Meeting, is now under H. Kingau's care at Trentham. The Tupuhi gelding is a good cut of-a jumper, and ns ho has plenty of, pace, he should soon win a hack steeplechase. Mr. G; P. Donnelly's jumpers, Otaraift and El Dorado, both of whom were seen ill action at Hastings, have been allowed to drop out of-their Napier enr gagenients. When Trafalgar next appears in public he will not; be the only horse bearing that name. In North' Queensland a bay gelding by, Lord Lennox—Tamarind races as Trafalgar, whilo a third Trafalgar ran at Robe (S.A.), early this veiir. One of the best-known sporting journalists in .Great Britain, Mr. C. H. Ashley, died just before our last files left England, in his eighty-first year. At various times Mr. Ashley was rin tho staff of tho "Sporting Life" and "Sportsman," and eventually became part owner of the latter. ,J. M'Conibo left'lJunedin for .Christchurch on Thursday last, and took, with him' Bon, Afton Loch, Leading Lady, Yoedel, and two rising two-year-olds by

All Roil, from Replete (rlam of Clynelis'hj and Lady Dundas (dam of Alton Loch). 'M'Conibe has taken over tho stables at Ricrarton rccentlv occupied by T. W. Price. Strike Fuud, by Birkenhead—Snooze, and thus full-brother to Nappor, who was killed wiiile taking pari in the Great Northern. Steeploeliaso two years ago, won the Epsom Handicap, one mile, at the Queensland Turf ulub's Meeting this month. El Brfl, who won the Corinthian Handicap at tho Victoria Racing Club's Meeting this .month, was bred by Mr. W. Walters, of Auckland. He is by Soult—Jlomi, by ITotclikiss—First i/ove, .by Nordenfeldt—Fishgirl. Momi is a half-sister to Antagonist and to Miss Annie (dam of Glenfmnaii). Bronzino, tho highest-priced stallion over imported to Australia, is in great favour among breeders, and already his list of next season is nearly full. Among the mares booked to him are Golden Slipper, Australia, Maltinc, and Vaporize, it is also probable that one or two New Zealand mares may bo sent across to Sydney on a visit to the sen of Marco—Flitters. Subsequent to the A.R.C. Meeting, it was announced that To Onga would be retired for the rest of tho season. This decision must evidently hav'e been rescinded, for the Great Northern Hurdles hero is again in work at Ellerslie, and there seems good prospects of his coming south for the Trentham and Uiecarton Meetings. .Mr. E. J. Watt's All Black—Kilindini colt Mombassa ran' unsuccessfully in. the Second Nursery Handicap at i Kaudwick last week. A Sydney writer, commenting on Mr. Watt's horse, says: "Mombassa, who for isome unexplained reason was quite a strong tip at an early stage, is a big,'- good-look-ing colt, and is trained by H. Ilayner. Ho may be good later, but at present docs'not look nearly' ready." Mombassa figures aniongst the entries for the Melbourne Cup. Mr. G. B. Starky (president of tho Amborlcy Steeplcchaso Clnb) contemplates mailing a visit to England, and Mr. G. L. Stead has been elected to till the presidential chair. Mr. Stead is probably the youngest man who has i over occupied a similar iwsition in con- 1 ncction with a racing club. : (j Scobio is keeping FabrikofE busy on tho tracks at Riccarton, and the sor. of Menschikoff—Fabia. is very forward in .condition. ' Judging by the tasks that aro being allotted him, it looks as if Mr. Harvey Patterson has serious intentions of sending tho colt to Sydney, to tako part in the Australian' Jockey Club's Derby, which will be decided early in October.
