UNDER ADVERSE CONDITIONS.
Under conditions worse than those of the match, played a' week previously, Newtown met Petono at Petone Recreation Ground. A steady rain fell at the commencement and developed into . a heavy pour towards the finish. Naturally good football was conspicuous by its absence, the contest rosolving itself into o mud-scramble. Barber, who had been injured on two previous Saturdays, was unable to play, 'Glading scored the one and only try for Petone, getting the ball at the twenty-five line, and after a brisk run, in' which' ho dodged several opponents, crossing Newtown's line. Ashton converted—Potone, s—o. '' At' half-time a rush was made , for shelter, where, after a brief interval, the referee whistled the players back to the field again, some of the Petone men showing reluctance to respond. Eventually all but two took their places and the rest of the game was easy for Newtown. Sullivan got over Petone's line,, taking'a pass from Spencer. Petone, 5; Newtown, 5.
