THE UPPER HUTT DISASTER. EXPLOSIVES & THE LAW. Tho sale of explosives without licenses featured certain charges which wero preferred in the. Magistrate's Court yesterday against Herbert Victor Bongo nml Hubert Leopold Pratt, whoso premises were recently destroyed by lire at Upper Ilutt. Jfr. D. U. A, CiHipor, S.M., heard the caso. Defendants \vi>n> charged with unlawfully storing ci'lij-V Jiito ivitliout having obtained « liivnw, and further with selling-restricted explosives without a license. Mr. IL F. o'L.eary appeared for tho defendants, and entered a plea, of guilty. In view of tho sad circumstances surrounding tho charges, counsel asked for leniency, and pointed out that both 'defendants'had not only suffered a proat deal hut had also sulFerod heavy financial loss. His Worship took a similar view, indicating in the course of n few remarks that ho appreciated what' counsel had mentioned. Defendants would ho fined os. on each (charge, with costs 14s. FIRST OF ITS KIND. A caso under tho Land Agents Aot, 1912—said to bo the first of its kind in Now" Zealand —was heard yesterday. A defendant was prosecuted under Section 14 of tho Act for acting in tho capacity of a land agent without first obtaining a liconso. Mr. A. A. S. Mcnteath, who appeared for defendant,'pleaded guilty, and asked that, in view of tho caso being tho first of its kind, His 'Worship would only impose a nominal penalty. Defendant' was fined £1. SENT BACK TQ SYDNEY. George Samuel Dwyer and Samuel King were both remanded to appear at Sydney on charges, of wife desertion. Constable Conians, of the New South Wales Police Force, produced the warrants for their arrest, and tho Magis-trate-ordered both -men to bo returned to Sydney in the constable's custody.. ARRESTED BY BLUEJACKETS. Basil Gordon M'llwain pleaded guilty to.a charge of using objectionable laiit;ua»(j. . Police-Inspector Hendrey stated that accused had used the language whilst travelling on tho' train between Petone aiid Wellington. Two bluejackets had heard-the accused use the language and had arrested him. , The Magistrate imposed.a, fine of £2, and ordered the accused to pay witnesses' expenses, Bs. ■ ',_' t On a similar charge Joseph, Driscoll was fined, a like amount. V. SERIOUS'CHARGE. ' . A~ middle-aged-man named William Wilson; w'as charged with carnally knowing a girl aged 6 years. On the application of Chief-Dotcctivo Broberg, accused was remanded to Juiic 24. •INSOBRIETY. . For insobriety Edward Cassidy and' William Thomas Waters wero each fined £1. MILITARY CASES. The application by Leslie King for exemption from compulsory military training on tho grounds of being u 'married man was refused. On a charge of failing .to attend. a parade he was fined' 10s.' .' ' •Edward Glavdn was fined Is. and costs 7s. for failing to attend parade. SUNDAY TRADE. Neil Austin was fined £Lon a charge.relating to Sunday trading. Ada Williams'was convicted and discharged. THE CIVIL SIDE. ' CLAIM ,0N NiZ.' SHIPPING CO. FOR LOST LUGGAGE. (Before Mr. W. ,G. Riddell, S.M., Anhio Cooper, representing -her infant daughter Clairo. Cooper, sued the Now' Zealand Shipping Company for '£25, for luggage lost "on the outward journev from Home. - The facts were admitted", and no evidence was called. Mr. Mi Myers, who. appeared for defendants, contended that, in consequence of a provision on the back of .plaintiff's ticket, the' New Zealand Shipping Company was, at most, only liable extent of £5. Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, who appeared for plaintiff, submitted 'that such a pro- ' yifiion was" contrary to the Merchants' Shipping p Act. ' .'' His Worship reserved decision. ' • UNDEFENDED DEBTORS.
