G'ullen, Commissioner of Police, has gone to Auokland. Advice has beon received, says the Christchurch "Sun," that Mr. H. R. Johnson, a, Hendon aviator, is on his way to Australia and Now Zealand. Ho expects- to reach Sydney next week, and will probably come to tho Dominion later.' Mr. Johnson is a graduate ot fho Er/sn School, and flies the Caudron biplane. , Mr. A. C. Bates, Government Meteorologist, is now on his return voyage from Australia to New Zealand, via Hobart and Bluff. Mr. R. Leo leaves Wellington to-day hy the Tohgariro for London. Colonel Chaytor was a passenger from Picton by the Mapourika last evening. Mrs. Alox. Mutrie was yesterday afternoon crowned Queen of the Carnival at Masterton, in presence of several thousands of people. The, ceremony (says our local correspondent) was.performed in an impressive and realistic manner.. ' The Bluff "Press" reports the death of an old identity, Mrs. C. E. Johnston. in her seventieth year. The deceased lady was born at Belfast, Ireland, in 1844, and was a sister of the lato Mr. William M'Michael, who settled at Green Point in 1857. Her brother had emigrated to New Soi;th ( Wales about 1850, and traded between that colony and New Zealand. She came on with her people in v 1866 in the ship Warrior Queen, the-vessel which four years later brought out tho first sparrows, starlings, blackbirds, and other English birds.. The Warrior Queen discharged at Port Chalmers, and Mrs. M'Michael broughther family to Bluff in the little Star of the South. ■In 1873 Miss M'Michael married Mr. C. E. Johnston, who was then on the' Bluff pilot staff tinder Captain Thompson. In 1879 he took up lighthoase work, -which he followed for twenty years, being stationed at Cape Campbell, Akaroa, Taiaroa Heads, Puysegur, Centre Island, and Moeraki. Mrs. Johnston accompanied him whenever he went, experiencing many exciting v incidents in effecting landings on different occasions.
