The Petorie Wesley lii'tcfary and Debating Society' held an ' elocutionary evening on .JXjjnday. _Mr., Foster, headmaster of Petond'District'-High- Schodl, judged tho contests,, .which were. divided into threo sections—recitations,, prepared reading; and'.reading at; sight. • The awards/made were -as follow : 1 — Recitation, Miss S.. Udy; prepared reading, Miss L." 'Lewis; reading., at sight, MisS BowseJ ' _ ' The fortnightly meeting of the St. John Ambnlarico Brigade, Pctone,- was held on Monday. An instructive lesson was given on ."How : to Treat ! a Caso when there aro no Splints and Bandages at Hand." Mr. Browne also gave members a brief-' outline of how" lie had treated a case lately when a Boy fell over a cliff at Lowry Bay. Mr. H. Baldwin (chairman)' presided at a meeting of tho Hutt District High School Committee' last evciiing. Present: Messrs. M'Dougiill, Meldrum, Macaskill, Woodward, Leighton, and Barlow. Tho headmaster's report stated that the'attendance for the last'two weeks had, been as-follows: —Primary department—Main School: roll, 562; average, 529. Eastern Hutt School: Roll, 159; average, 142. Secondary Department—Roll, 14; average, 13. This was considered satisfactory owing to tho state of the Weather. The report added that a system of disinfecting floors before sweeping had been'tried successfully. and recommended its adoption.' Tho committee agreed to adopt the headmaster's suggestion in this respect, and also to apply to the Education Board'for four rubbish-receptacles. Permission was also given the headmaster to have the bicycle-rack in the corridor 'removed. - ■
A well-attended meeting of the Western Hutt Electors' Association was held on Monday evening, Mr. W. Phypors presiding. It was decided, with a view of raising funds for the purpose of building a social hall, that a sub-com-mitteo, consisting of Messrs. Phypftrs, Wray, Kyle, .Savage, Magterson, Taylor. and Haseldene, arrange for a concert- to be held at an early dato.^
The Kiwi Assembly, under the management of;JTossrs. Butridso.and 'Leadbeater, wh'o officiated as JLO.'s,. lipid another successful'-evening at St. Augustine's Hall, Petone, last liight. About forty couples attended, and an enjoyablo time wa3 spent.
