COMMISSION MAKES PRELIMINARY TOUR. • The members of the Inland Waterways Commission, Messrs. Ferguson (chairman), J. E. Watson, of Invercargill, and E. Parry, Government hydroelcctrical engineer, returned to Welling- ■ ton on Sunday morning from a Brief visit to tlie Auckland district. Speaking to a reporter last evening Mr. Ferguson said that in the Auckland district the commission inspected a number of canal routes pointed out to tliero. The configuration of tho country was also surveyed from various hills and tho commission journeyed down tho Waikato River from Cambridge to the bar. Various people were interviewed in Auckland, simply with a view to finding out what information they had got' together and what information could bo gob together before i tho commission commences its investigations. "The commission," Mr. Ferguson stated, "would not necessarily meet again until December. • Tho journey just completed was purely of a preliminary nature. The commission is now in a position to map out its itinerary and the chairman mentioned that it might be cheaper to arrange sittings at various places rather than bring witnesses over long distances to appear before : the commission."
