"JOHN BULL" DERBY SWEEP
« ' 'A FINE OF £100 IMPOSED. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright London, Juno 14. Henry James Houston, of Burnley, and William Dixon and Charles Towler, of Birmingham, pleaded guilty of being concerned in a widespread, conspiracy in the provinces for tho sale of tickets in the "John Bull" Derby'sweep. Lord' Coleridge, tho presiding Judge, regretted that the promoters had liot been arrested. Houston'was, fined £100; the others were bound over. At the hearing in the Lower Court, evidence was given that Houston ordered eleven million tickets, totalling, with circulars, eight tons in weight, ,to be printed. Horatio Botlomloy (tho acting-edi-tor of "John Bull") and Julius Elias (the latter representing the printers of tho paper) were recently summoned for publishing an article in "John Bull" containing a proposal and scheme regarding tickets for lotteries to be run in Switzerland, tho lotteries to be called "The Grand National Sweepstake" and "Tho John Bull Derby Sweep." In each case a certain sum was promised for charities. Mr. Bottomlev contended that the articles constituted legitimate newspaper controversy.
