NOTES AND COMMENTS.
• riar Glkncoe.i. .' Entries close or Friday next lor all events (except tho Trial Plato) in connection with tho Wellington Racing Club's Winter Meeting. Of tho eight ovents carded , each day, four aro for. jumpers. There is si hack hurdle race and steeplechase, and an open hurdle race and steeplechase. The Wellington Steeplechase, tlireo miles and a quarter, is worth 1000 sovs., or as much as tlie Great Northern Steeplechase. The big event on tlio second day carries SOU sovs. as prize money. The Parliamentary Handicap, one milo and a quarter, run on tho opening day, is worth 400 sovs., and the . Winter*'.O.at6. ono 'iuile,. is worth 250 sovS. As usual, the hacks aro liberally catered for, and the club will no doubt bo- rewarded with record entries.
H. Lowe, who was formerly connected with Mr. w. E. Bidwill'e stables, is now in Sydney, and has been-granted a jockey's license by tho A.J.U. . There aro upwards of forty voungste'rs at present working on tho Kiccarton tracks. Tho southern stables should bo ablo to hold their own in the two-year-old events in the coming season.
Tho weather conditions have been perfect nt Hastings lately, and the tracks there at present afford excellent going.
In consequence of the lack of interest taken in its last two meetings the Springfield Having C-lub has decided to disbund.
An Auckland writer _ say's:—"When it is realised that the increase in tho sum put through the totalisator at Ellerslic (luring tno eleven days' racing of tho sea-son just ended represented over ninety thousand golden sovereigns,_ it will bo obvious that racing is not losing any of its popularity."
An operation, comparatively new in tho colonies, was performed in Melbourne on the cross-country rider,-J. N. M'Gregor, the other day. M'Gregor had both legs brokeii by a fall in a hurdle raco at Moonce Valley. The bones of one leg mended quickly, but the jagged onds of tho bones of tho othor leg had lacerated the muscles, and the tissuo hindered tho knitting process. Tho operation consisted in clamping tho bonoends together with steel bars, fixed to th? bones by fine screws. Tho latest available reports state that M'Gregor is now making fair progress towards recovery.
It is reported that Ruatangata, who won the slaiden Hurdles at Ellersiio on Wednesday last, has changed hands at £300, and goes into S. Jaraicson's Awapuni stable.
There are only four more totalisator meetings to be held beforo the present racing season closes:—Hawke's Bay J.C., Napier Park 8.C., Gisborno R.C., and Wellington R.C.
Advices from Napier state that Forest Prince was a runner in the Hurdles at Randwick last week, and that his owner fully expected him to win. He was out of a pi cco at the finish, and is probably not as good as .T- Hennah thought when ho purchased him in Melbourne last year. There is every likelihood that he will ho returned to this country and kept in minor races, "where ho may be ablo to pay his way.
Julian, who was shipped to Sydney last evening, looks remarkably wt'li, and much benefited by his spell. He was jitmDod once at Nopier beforo leaving, and gave a good display. Poor fencing has contributed to his failure several times in the nast season, but Jiis lato trainer thinks- he will fence much hettnr on his next public appearance. J. Hennah will tako charge of him on arrival at Sydney, and will then procesd on to Melbourne. Julian is not engaged in tho Nationals in the southern State, but there are plentv of good races weekly that he will bo ablo to take part in.
Tlio Poverty Bay sportsman, Mr. K. S. Willinms, owner nf Chortle, recently offered 000 i*nine.is for Silver Kin?, a maiden (.'elding, owned bv A. Ellinghnm, of -Hmtinrrp. He is six years old, and linn nt various limes given his owner a lei, of trouble, but he now looks like turriini' out useful, hence Mr. Elllnglinrn'n refusal to part with him,
At the conclusion of the racinc nt Ellerfllio £.'!00 was offered for Goldfire, imt the owner would not sell, and intinial.i'd lliat double that sum would not make lilm change his mini
If Peary starts in jhe Hawke's Bay Stccplwliuso lie will liavo tlie oliriiiec to einulnte the deeds of Moifsia, who won both the Great Northern Steepleclinse and the Hawke's Bay Steeplechase.
If Peary is the really good liorso that popular report, combined with hio ro-
cent Ellerelio performance, would indicate, lio will corUiinly liavo a chauco of sweeping tho board in ibo big crosscountry ovonto this year. Ho lias alroady boon handicapped for tho Hawko's Bay Steeplechase, and if nominated for tho Wellington aiul Canterbury meetings ho is not likely to receivo prohibitive imposts. As a matter of fact, it is laid down that in tho Grand National Steeplechase at tlio Canterbury meeting, no horse shall bo handicapped or penalised to carry more than 12st. 71b.
