Sir Walter Buchanan, M.P., gave an address last night to an audience of between fifty and sixty on the lines of his speech at Carterton. Ho refuted the statement that 80 per.cent, of tho Press was under the thumb of tho Government, and said that 53 per cent, of the newspapers were Opposition, 20 Independent, and only 27 supported tho present Government. The chair was taken at Sir Walter Buchanan's meeting to-night by the Mayor of Greytbwu who remarked, in , a brief, introductory speech, that he Jiad to introduce an old. friend under a new title. He added that no one was a more deserving subject, than Sir Walter. Buchanan of the honour which had been conferred upon him. Sir Walter Buchanan, in acknowledging the compliment paid him' by the chairman, said that tlie title was not or his seeking. If it had been left to himself lie would rather have cluikt to tho old name that had stood him allthe years he had been in tho Wairarapa. Hβ referred to his trip Home which had prevented him giving his usual-'pre-ses-sional address. Dealing. with political subjects lie enumerated a number of Acts passed by the present Government, and emphasised tho great good resulting therefrom. He emphatically declared :his conviction that tho freehold would become the popular system and went on to deal with tho land question on the lines of his address at Carterton on Monday evening, dwelling particularly upon opportunities that were now open to a poor man who wished to go upon tho land. Sir Walter Buchanan dealt also with various other aspects of the Reform legislation and its operation and recalled some of the misdeeds of the late Government, including the advertising boycott of The Dominion'.
A voto of thanks to Sir Walter Buchanan for his address, proposed by Mr. T. Ingley and seconded by Mr. W. luiapp, was carried unanimously.
