THE GERMAN FILM INDUSTRY. "According to the annua! report of the Berlin Chamber of. Commerce. the German film industry has obtained a very great importance during the lost few years. BerUh; has bcc'ome one of the centres of the nlnt industry, 'and especially as regards fllme for production., in picture shows. A -number of film factories are cstab j hshedin J3erljn, and the capital invested is very considerable, while< the amounts changing hands, in connection with material?/ salaries, to authors and actors,: reouieites, wages, etc., are extremely large. Alrother German and foreign film producing firms have branches in Berlin, or at least representatives. The letting of films Ijs becoming more and more concentrated within a few firms, and tho increased cost of producing' films has resulted in" theprices for letting certain classes of films having reached a, very high figure. At the • *' P* ctur ® ehows have to reckon wtfch increased expenses for rcnto, advertising. etc., so that the times when they reaped golden. ;harvc6ts appear to have passed while new ventures without largo capital are.hopeless from the start. Gre-at progress is nl&6"madi» in Berlin with the roughj a-nd films ready for printing. Experts of films are very. considerable, although th« tastes of the various countries to which they are being dispatched vary to a great extent.

Early. in March > t last C-llladfl. floated a loan for a similar amount,i but ,the issue prite was £99. This was .o.: failure OP the ' underwriters had to provide 78 tier cent!'of the' Amount, ine loan to. he raised now is not' likely to meet-with any . better reception than the earlier issue o« the market is not at oil favourable. Furthermore, the economic conditions in Canada are far from satisfactory. and this is Evidenced by the failure of Greenfield and Company. This firm hoe suspended raymMit. and this must advcreely affect Canadian stocks. However, the Canadian Government must, have borrowed money, as It? commitments run into many millions 6t«rling. , COMPANIES REGISTERED; : .
