WELLINGTON SOUTH

THE PROGRESSIVE SOCIETY. . The first anmial report of the Wellington South Progressive Society, has been, prepared. . It is clainicd that very useful work has been done during the year. "Newtown," says the report, "had long suffered from want of such an association, as this. _#In the past we have been represented on the City Council by men who certainly liaye some interest in this end -cf tho city, and some of them live here, but at the same time they have a far greater interest in tho centre of tho, city, and the advocacy of our claims has'often had to take second place. At first there was a. tendency on the part of tho Mayor and some councillors to resent our action in daring to baud ourselves together in self defence, but now that we are a year old and have proved our intentions are good, and that we are working in the interests of tho citizens as a whole, the City Council has come to . regard us as a reasonable body of citiz-ens-j tvlio have votes at their command, and bave decided to grant some, though'not all, of QUr requests. One of our. first efforts was a strong deputation to the City Council touching tho Constable Street extension and other matters. . Out next deputation. was to the Government, "touching the matter of cheaper telephone fees, slot telephones, and extension of time for closing of mails. The latter was promptly granted. . . . Cheaper telephone fees were promised us with the now automatic system, and tho Newtown 'satellite exchange' is now well' under way, but we understand it will bo another two or three years before the system is completed, and wo are to be penalised at this end of tho city until it is finished." Tile society finishes its first year a work with a small cTedit balance, and looks forward to another year of usefulness. .
