THE MAY GRADING RETURNS. According to returns compiled by the Department of Agriculture the total number of bales, of hemp graded during May whs 8891, as compared with 17,107 for the corresponding month of last year, a decrease of 8216 bales. For the twelve months ending May 31, 1914, the number of bales graded was 1<13,556, as compared with 137,1G9 for tho previous twelve months, the increase being G387 bales. During 'the month 3257 bales of tow were dealt with as compared with 5128' for the corresponding month of last yeai-, a decrease of 1871 bales. For the twelve months ending May 31, 1!)14, the number of bales graded was -16,888, as compared with 47,003 for the previous twelve months, a decrease of 115 bales. In all 79 bales of stripper slips were passed for export as compared with 855 for tlie corresponding month of last year, a decrease'of 776 hales. For tlie twelve months ending May 31, 1014, the number of- bales passed was 4167. The grading stord at Napier was destroyed by fire . recently , and consequently no grading was done at that j)ort during the month. Over 500 bales of hemp were • destroyed in the conflagration.
