A letter from tho Town Clerk stated that in futuro the custodians of City reserves would decide when the ground wero fit for play. ■ Tho secretary stated that ho had again been communicated with, with a view to ascertaining if a, Wednesday would suit for a match against the English team. It was decided to reply that only a Saturday would bo acceptoblef The Hawko's Bay League is to be invited to return Wellington's recent visit to Napier. Ilawlte's Bay will be offered 50 per cent, of tho gate takRepresentative matches were decided on a,s follow Against Wanganui,' at Wellington in July, and Canterbury at Ohfistchurch on August 1, the actual

dates to bo arranged by correspondence,, Fixtures with Nelson and Taranaki were left over till a decision regarding tho match against the British team is readied. Mr. C. Murphy reported that tho Hawko's Bay trip cost £22 125., _ which meant a deficit to tho Wellington Lenguo of £2 125., as the £20 guarantee had been received. Mr. Summers, of the Newtown Club, said that Newtown wished to include in their team nest Saturday a player named — Sullivan, who had been disqualified for two playing Saturdays. This would mean including as "a playing Saturday" March 30, on which day matchcs woro postponed without tho authority of tho League. After somo discussion it was decided that Sullivan should bo allowed to play as requested. My. W. S. Brice, who was among the objectors to this decision, said that tho sentence was in tho first placo light, and now tho I-eaguo was showing considerable weakness in virtually lifting it. NORTHERN UNION TOUR

ANOTHER REVERSE FOR THE ENGLISHMEN. By Toleffraiili—Pre33 Association—Cooyrleht Sydney, Julio 8. Heavy rain is falling, which may. affect the various sports meetings unless they are postponed, and should give tho English Nortfiern 'Union team an advantage against New South Wales. The visitors aro putting on the full strength of thsir team. Tho Press is commenting unfavourably on the visitors' action in not replacing an injured man, us! tho spectators were thus doprivod of witnessing an even game, and tho visitors' opponents were deprivod of the full fruits of victory. Experts consider tho Englishmen too heavy and slow; there is too much Dreadnought about tho forwards. English teams' were previously beaten ' because their forwards were not fast, weighty, or rugged .enough to cope with tlio'Australian opposition. The English selectors seem to have gone for heavy, forward men. Kelly's (ox-New Zealander) trickiness, Herder's all-round play, and Messenger's phenomenal • goal-kicking woro features of tho match.

THE SECOND MATCH. (Rec. June 8, ,8.20 p.m.) •i Sydney, June 8. In spite of tho showery weather and the heavy going, the English Northern Union'team failed in its second attempt tj defeat 'New South Wales. Tho weather conditions, and) tho fact that they wero playing a Vastly stronger team', in r eluding -Wagstaff, tho famous centre-three-quarter,- were all in their favour. Tho gaino was certainly an improvement on the previous match. It opened with oven play in mid-field. ■ Tho tackling was keener. Wagstaff took tho ball to the local quarters and scored tho first try. Rogers failed to convert. The first goal for New South Wales camo from a penalty, which waa' splendidly landed from the touch-lino' by Messenger. The local men .again demonstrated their fearless attack, but the Englishmen, revelling in the rain', 1 undoubtedly wefo keener, and kept the. crowd at a high point, pfvexcitement; . Later Messenger retired hurt, and l Fraser'roplaced'nim; At tho same mo- : m'o'nt .Horder dropped tho second penaltygoal from half-way for' New 1 , South Wales, and almost simultaneously Hall, the English half-baok, was injured and left tho field. The visitors -played short. Horder- then notched a further two points from off-sido play against Wagstaff. With tho loss of their half-back England wero at a disadvantage, and play centred dangerously near the visitors' goal, but tho local men failed to 6coro, the score then being: New South Wales, 6; England, 3. On resuming,-the visitors tacklod desperately, but failed to score owing to tho 'cleverness of tho home baeks. The centro of tho field became a quagmire, but the Englishmen did not handlo the ball as surely-as did tho New-South Walos men. The game began to slacken until Horder added two points from mid-field, and tile final stages wcro exciting. From a series of scrums at tho mouth of tho New South Wale 3 goal the ball was Idcked into mid-field, ICelly securing a try, which was not converted. Tho final scoro was: New South Wales, 11 points; England, 3. Hall sustained concussion of tho brain.
