—r-r-rs-. , ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the New Zealand Chess Association was held in the office of, tho secretary (Mr. A. G. Fell) last night, Mr. B. B. Allen presiding. Tho annual report stated that, the association now consisted of 17 clubs, as follow:—Auckland " Chess Club, 'Anck-. land Workings Men's, Gisborno, Napier, Masterton, Wanganui, llangitiiei, Wellington Chess Club/ Wellington Working Men's, Wellington South, Nelson, Canterbury, Westport, Timaru, Oamaru, Otago, and Carterton High School Clubs. The general account showed a small credit- balance on the year's transactions. Tho association much regTOtted tliatMr. H. L. James was unable to contimip -ar cditor-of—tire' "Gongrerfs' Book," but. a numbor of enthusiasts, having offered assistance, it was "decided to publish tho games' of tho last congress,' held at Auckland,, without annotation, but with; remarks' on' each game. Although largo prizes were offered for the annual tournament this yeh,r, 'it failed to attract any players from outsiilo. It, howevor, 1 succeedcd in bringing together .nearly' all- tho leading talent in New Zealand, fifteen players facing the starter. The congress was ono of .the mosij, e.v,er .held., in. tho was'lavish, and the management and arrangements weyo up to tho best standard of previous years. The'prize-winners were: W. E. Mason, first and championship; R. J. Barnes, A. W. 0. Davies, and A. W. Gyles, tio over second, third, and fourth prizes; F. IC.: Kelling, fifth prize; IS. J; Miles, sixth prizo, and G. F. Dodds,; seventh prize and tho brilliancy prize', ■•/The.'thanks-of tho. association: were tendered to Mr. H. L. James for his arduous task in editing tho "Nelson Congress Book?'; to Messrs. Grierson, Still, 'Brown, Kummer, and Joseph (vice-presidents), for donations; to tho donors of the brilliancy prize; to Messrs. Grierson and Sainsbury, for donations towards tho "Nelson Congress Book" ; to affiliated clubs for subscriptions towards tho Auckland Congress; to tho Auckland Committee for its able management of the tournament; and to tho "Evening Post" for supplying copies of official reports.
The report, and balance-sheet were adopted, and the secretary, Mr. ;Fell, was warmly congratulated on his'management of the affairs of the association. - The election of, officers resulted as fol-lows-.—Patron, His Excellency tho Governor; president, the Mayor of Christcliurch; vice-presidents, Messrs. Little, Grierson, and Sainsbury (northern division of the North Island), Dal-' rymple, Pleasants, and Kummar (southern division of the North Island). 11. A; .Joseph, G, F.'Dodds,' and A.
