Tho death of. Sir William Anson, Bart., Warden of All Souls and M.P. for Oxford, is not without interest for New Zealanders. The title was gained by William, grandfather of tho late baronet, for meritorious service in tho Peninsular war, and especially ,at tho battle of Talavera. At,that battle tho two brothers, William, tho elder, and George, tho younger, distinguished themselves as cavalry leaders. After tho war, William was mado a baronet and George was knighted. There are still some membors of tho younger branch who assert that a mistake .was niadoj and that tlio baronetcy had been intended for Gcorgo and tlie minor distjnetion for William, but tho supposition has never received any confirma. tion. Sir William married a daughter of Major General Sir Denis Pack, ono of Wellington's trusted Peninsular leaders. His son, Sir John Anson, was killed in a railway accident at Wigan iii 1873. Ho had three sons, Sir William, who has Just died, without issue. Frederick, who had a farm at Akaroa, married Miss Roberts, a New Zealandor, and had one son, Denis, and four daughters, among whom are Mrs, C. Crawford and Mrs. Estcourt, both lately residents of Wellington. Tho third brother of Sir William was tho lato Admiral Algernon Anson. During the last seven months, all threo brothers havo died. The title therefore devolves on Denis, tho young Now Zealander, educated at Eton, and Trinity College, Oxford, unmarried, and a barrister at. law. Sir George Anson, the younger .brother, had numerous descendants, ono of whom, Mr. Ji, 0. Anson, a grandson, now lives it Lower Hutt.

Beforo the ordinary business of tho lower Hutt Council began last evening tho Mayor (Mr.',ll. Baldwin) referred to the loss sustained by tho death of the late Mr. Orton Stevens. Ho stated that Mr. Stovens had earned tho'respect of all who know him, and had creditably filled many public positions in tho district. A motion of sympathy and condolence with Mrs. Stevens and family was carried in silence, members of.tho council standing.
