NOTES AND COMMENTS,

!lir (jj.IN'COE.I . Tlio Winter Jl'ootiiifr of the Auckland liaoinp; Club will hs concluded at Ellerslio to-:lny. The principal events are tlio Winter Steeplechase, of 750 sovs, throe miles, York Welter, one mile, of 500 kovs., and (lie Campbell Hurdles, of 800 snvs, two mile?. Kurnalpi was brought back from Diii.lcdln yesterday, and will be railed »o Jlawera to-day. The. Achillea horse Stepney has changed hand-, and will in future rare in the colours of J. JI. Vrosser. This leaves Mr. 1-J. Kaynor without ,1 horse to carry his colours, as Dearest and Hoopoe are both at the Waikanae Stud.

Stepney got galloped on in ilie Rnukawa Cup, and will need ;i spell. His next appearance will be in iho spring, when he will race as a gelding. Admiral Soult, winner of a doublent Ellcrslie on' Saturday, dues not appear to be badly treated in the Campbell Hurdles to-day. He is only olli. above tins minimum ill a rcrv' weak Held. .Masler Lupin was a strong favourite, locally lor,the Ladies' Bracelet at Ellerslii- on Saturday, but Mr. J. Bull's horse finished opt ol a place. The winner up in the three-year-old Self, with Yankee Doodle (a winner on the first day) in second* place. ' The victory of Haskaylio in the Princo of Wales Handicap oil Saturday was anticipated locally, as reports from tile north stated that the Birkenhead gelding was at his best. The Karamu representative always races well on tho Ellcrslie track, and, twelve months ago, he won the York Welter Handicap. When Peary ran home at the head of tho held in tho Great Northern Steeplechase on Saturday, the Kav.imu representative created a new time record for the race. Tho Birkenhead gelding has proved himself to bo in the first flight of this season's 'chasers, and, probably, he will givo further evidence of his ability ero tllo season cdiiies to an end. This is tho first time that tlibllon. J. 1). Ormoiid has won tho Croat Northern Steeplechase, though good horses—Aiida>: and Nappei—have represented him previously. It will be remembered that tho last-named broke his leg when contesting tho racb two years ago. . , It is stated that tho Auckland hurdle horse Momma:; wilj, be shipped from Auckland ro Sydney next Monday. , Injtciikendor, who is chgagetl in.the Hunt Club Cup to-day) won tho Hunters' Hurdles at Ellcrslie on the. opening day. Tho chestnut maro will bo a' good favourite, for she jumps tho big fences well. In a schooling gallop with como of the nortlieni steeplechase hoi'scs last week, she acquitted, herself particularly well. A. Julian will have tho inoiuit. • One of the; surprises in connection with tho Great Northern Steeplechase fias tho failure of Gleitmoro to get round tho country. Mr. 11. J. Cameron's Horse is a proficient "leppcr," and whatever caused "him to fall must havo amounted to a piece of sheer ill-for-tune. Hauera, who showed such a bold front for tho major portion of the Great Northern Steeplechase, is engaged in the Tamaki Steeples this afternoon. Tho distance is two miles and a half, and this will bo all in favour of tho Auckland horse. Haskaync, winner of tho York Welter Handicap last year, is engaged in the canto raco to-day, with exactly two Eloiio more than ho carried to victory hist year. Most backers will profer to allow tho Birkenhead gelding to race against them to-dnv. Probably Royal Arms, f)st. 101b. (A. Oliver), ami Wee ()l':a. fist. Gib; (L. Wilson), will bo tho favourites. Huffy will be making his third appearance at the meeting, if ho stflrtn in tho Winter Steeples at Ellcrslie to-day. Tho Seaton Dclaval gelding is well Reasoned by racing, and is .probably Jittlc the worse for his other races. He is likely to start favourite to-day. . Signo is a much-dismissed horse in the north, but, so far, ho has not done all that was expected'of him. The Soult colt is nicely treated in tho Fitzrov Welter to-day. Ho and JMon Athol will no doubt bo best hacked on tho machine.

Ifc is certain that Crown Pearl did not run up to best..form in the Princn of, Wnles Handicap on Saturday, and the Now Plymouth horso should do much better' to-day in the Farewell Handicap, live furlongs. In this race be is ton weight, with l'Ost. 91b. False prices are ol'tott paid in the concluding event at Auckland meeliurrs, but thero is less fear that this will be tho caso to-day.
