ATHLETIC SPORTS.

RUGBY RULES.

THE FEATURES TO-DAY,

What, are probably the four most even-ly-matched teams in this season's senior championship meet to-day, and in each case (says the llugby Onion's report) closely contested games should be e i At Athlolic Park, l'oneke and. Wellington meet, and University and St. James. Wellington has not suffered a defeat thus far, being level jvith Athletic. Poneke have been playing good football since their first game, ihis afternoon they will miss tho services of Tilyard. Tho match between Petono and Oriental at I'etono ought to bo a, good game,' and both teams nave a record for playing open, fast football. Melrose, recently victorious over Poneke, meet Athletic at Hutt, and a stubborn contest seems likely. Tho attention of Selwyn and United Methodist players is directed to a change of ground, necessary owing to Newtown Park being unfit.

BOXING

HAGERTY & O'GRADY. Very, keen interest is being taken in the contest between O'Grady and Hagorty at the Town Hall on Monday, and .everything 'points to an overflowing house. This is the first appearance of 0 Grady in New Zealand, although he is particularly well known through his, many contests, and his.record as one of the cleverest exponents in his class in Australia. His work in training has been watched by enthusiasts, who express tho opinion that he is superior in speed and tactics to "Hock" Keys. In exhibition bouts with E. Stewart, of Victoria College, some particularly fine sparring has been eoen, and his speed and foot work were particularly noticeable. Hagerty arrived from the south yesterday morning, and is putting the finishing touches to his preparation at Tracy's. Seon in action yesterday afternoon, his work was attractive, and he appears to be in the best of condition. His speed seems to have improved, while liis attack is as powerful as ever. In the threo good contests should'bo seen. Macfarlano not being availablo, it has been decided to match .Hunter, tho welter champion, with 'Smith, and as both are hard hitters, an excellent contest should result. . j
