Estcourt, 2nd Dragoons (Royal Scots Greys), who somo little timo ago resigned tho position of assistant military secretary to MajorGeneral Godloy, was a passenger for London by tho Ruahino yesterday. His Honour tho Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout) is visiting Blenheim on Supremo Court business. He is expected to return to AVellington at the cud of tho week. Captain : A. W. Macarthur Onslow, Instructor in Mounted Duties in tho Canterbury Military District, will leavo Chrtiichuruh shortly on his return to England, via Australia. Mr. Sefton Moorhouse leaves for Fiji to-day on a business trip, Mr. K. M'Leay has been appointed general manager of the Richardson Stoamship Company of Napier, as successor to,tho lato'Mr. P. H. Kelly. The chief secretary of tho Salvation Army (Lieut.-Colouel Powley) will visit Dunedih on Juno 14 and 15, Queenstown. Juno 1G and 17; Milton, June 18; and Christchurch, Juno 21 and 22. Mr. A. A. Paape, Reform' Party organiser, left last evening on a visit to tho Auckland district. .

L; Turner, of the Westminster Tobacco Company's London office, arrived in Wellington from Sydney by tho Ulimaroa on Wednesday. ' Mr. Turner ■has spent several months touring India and Australia, and will mako a tour of New Zealand before returning to England. Smithyman, who recently resigned the position of assistant secretary to the Wellington, branch of the Seamen's Union; left Wellington for Auckland, en route to Fiji last evening. Prior to his .departure, Mr. Smithyman was, the recipient of an inscribed case of pipes. References were made by speakers to the esteem in which ho was liold and the loss sustained by his departure. _ A large 'gathering of Canterbury journalists assembled in Christchurch yesterday afternoon to make a presentation to Mr. S. Saunders, who retires this month from tho editorship of tho "Lyttclton ffimes." Mr. W. H. Triggs, editor of tlio "Press," presided, and, in tho course of his speech, referred to the sterling services rendered by Mr. Saunders to his party. Mr. W. H. Atack, editor of the "Canterbury Times," and Mr. R. Bell, of Ashburton, also spoke appreciatively of Mr. Saunders as a, journalist and a friend. Dr.-H. G.'H. Monk,-District-Health Officer at Auckland," Wholoft for Tonga on March 18 on leave of absence, returned to Auckland by the Navna on 'Tuesday. Dr. Monk also acted as chief medical officer at Tonga during tho absence Dr. Arnold W. Izard.
Mr. R. A. Keenan, who is under transfer,from the Lands and Survey Department to the head olKco of the Agricultural Department, was farowelled by tho officers of the Lands Department on Wednesday ovening, and presented with a handsomer case of cutlery. Mr. J. Mackenzie, Under-Secretary for Lands, and other officers, omphasised Mr. Keenan's good qualities, officially and socially, and expressed a hope that he might at some futuro time return to the Department in which he had spent many years of able sorvice.
Mr. W. Launder, of Manners Street, has received iritimation of tho death of his father, Mr. George-. Launder, who resided at Preston, Melbourne,' Victoria. 'Tho late Mr. Launder was ono of tho two surviving pioneers' of tho eight-hour movement in Victoria, and was 83 years old at tho time of his death. When only 16 years old lie" came to Australia from Kent, and was always keenly interested in the Labour movement. At the tinio of the Ballarat gold rush he was ono of tho first on the field, nnd later ho settled in Queensland. Afterwards he returned to Victoria, and was 6ccrctary of tho.fund with which was erected tho statue to commemorate tho introduction of the eight-hour day. Mr. Launder had-a family of nino Eons,of whom five survive him. When tho last eight-hour day procession was held in Brisbane, tho promoters sent for Mr. Launder to take part in the celebrations, paying all his expenses, as he was ono of thoso who participated in ' tlid first function of that kind held in tho Queensland capital. Tho only survivor now left of the iivo hundred eight-hour pioneers inVictoria is Mr. J. M'Kay, who also resides at Preston.
Tho passengers by tho R.M.S. Otranto, which arrived in Fremantlo last week, included Mr. Graham Moffat, the Scotch dramatist and actor, who has' come out'to tour Australia, under the direction of Mr. E. J.,Carroll. Mr. Moffat, who is accompanied by his wife and daughter, will open with "Bunty Pulls tho Strings," at Sydney, on June 27. During his tour in Australia he will stage 'Tiun'ty"_ and "A Scrapo of the. Pen," two typical Scotch dramas, which have met with success in England and America.
