OTAKI MAORI RACING CLUB

WINTER MEETING. IMAEOSE' WIXS BAUKAWA COT. ■ An additional attraction at tho Otaki Maori Racing Club's Winter Meeting this year is tho cross-country racing, and no doubt the promise of a steeplechase in yesterday's racing helped to swell the attendance. There lrtis delightful weather for the opening of the meeting, and the trains to Otaki from north ami south were- crowded with racegoers. By the time the first event camo on for decision, the enclosure contained a record gathering, and, although the ground was somewhat damp underfoot, the conditions overhead compensated for this, and gavo the public opportunity to enjoy the "ood sport provided. Also it enabled them to speculate freely, and during the doy tho sum of ,521,257 was passed through tho totalisator. as compared with .£18,567 on the first day of the. winter meeting last j-ca'r.

Owing to heavy rain, falling earlier in the week, tho going on tho racin» track was rather holding, and the 'times in tho various races were on tho slow side. Otherwise the going did not affect the racing, for the fields were large and the finislies interesting. Ton candidates-stood their ground in the Maiden Plate for jrhich Gay Guard was the public clioico Deeley always had tho favourite in a nice position, and ho won rather easily at the finish. There was nothing of much Mass m the held behind the winner, but he won in a style which suerscsted that he will be 'hoard of again before long, tie is certainly well enough bred, beiii" nv Kqmtass sire, Advance, from Frisco JUaul (an own sister to Sir Frisco). Montana (by Elevation), the top-veicht in the Ofciki Hack Handicap, was made tho bigpest favourite of the day, but he ran badly and never flattered his backer.* at any stage of tho race, which resulted in a dead heat between Pnrsefiller and . Merry linin. Tho latter was making her second appearance during tho afternoon. Mysteriuin and Perhaps finished next to tho placed horses.

Mount Victoria always races well in heavy goinfr, and the .knowledge of this Has probably what induced the public to make, tho Signalman gelding favourite in the Eahui Handicap. Ho made a bold bid for victory, but, after leading until the home bend, was well beaten in the straight. Tho finish was a closo one between Makara, Black. Lupin, and Princess Moutoa, while Listen and Salzbnr.i were right on tho heels of the third lioree. Deeley, on Makara, had his second winning rido during the afternoon.

Among a dozen horses in the concluding event Amity was "i?.dc favourite, with His Eminence and Sqnare Deal both) in strong demand. The early running was made by Hanpara (Sensation—Catseye), but he was done with before the straieht was reached, mid Whisperer .(by Mystification) took charge. The latter was in turn cut down and rather easily beaten by the favourite. Square Deal, who was badly placed through tho race, made a groat effort to tfet up in the straight, but conld only reach third place.
