Quite a number of scholars journeyed to ttio'.Hutt and petono Schools yesterday to discover to their agreeable surprises that there was no school. It seems that the holiday was observed on Monday last, and tho children wero told to attend on Wednesday, but apparently so fow responded to the order that -the schools did not open. A valuablo horse, owned by Mr. G. Cotton, of Petono, whilst drinkkg at a trough in Richmond Street on Tuesday, took fright at something, and in its attempt to fleq fell and injured its leg so badly that it had to bo destroyed. A "rainbow" wedding was solemnised yesterday at St. Augustine's Church, Petono, by the Rev. A. Stevenson, the contracting parties, being Mr. Harry Edlin, second son of Mr. \V. Edlin,: of Petone, and Miss May Latham, daughter of the late Mr. J. Latham, of Wellington. The bride, who was given away by her step-father, 'Sir. A. Arrowsmith, wore a dress of cream satin beautifully trimmed with cream lace. Tho bridesmaids wero Miss' Phoebe Edlin (pink silk), Miss Love (blue silk), Miss Bayliss (orange), Miss I. Edlin (heliotrope), and Mis Flo Wright (green). Mr. H. Nelson was groomsman. In tho evening a reception was held at St. Augustine's Hall, upwards of 100 attending. Mr. H. Preston was pianist.and Mr. S. Money, M.C. The bride's travelling dress was a grey costume with hat to match. Mr and Mrs. Edlin loft last ovoning for tho south where the honeymoon will be spent. Tho Lower llutt Methodist Schoolroom was crowded last evening, the Itov. Vim. Beckett presiding at tho anniversary social. Tho Rev. Mr. Chapman addressed tho gathering, his subject being "An Aggressive Church." Tho choir, under Mr. Shearer, rendered several selections and an interesting programme was supplied by Mesdnnies'Harris and Lowe,' tho Misses Slinn and Lewis and Messrs. Jenness, M'Kain, Peck, Clauson, jM'Donald, and Mayon. Votes of thanks to all ivho assisted in the function wero carried by acclamation. The annual social of tho Petono TcchliichrSchobl pupils took place last evening and was well attended. The Petone Oddfellows' Lodge last evening entertained tho Sister "Wallace, 1.0.0. F., at the Buick Street Hall, Petono, Mr. R.' Mothes, P.P.G.M., prosiding/'over a representative gathering. Tho hope was'expressed that these social evening. would be held more frequently.
