GOOD WORK IN PROGRESS. Tho officers and non-commissioned officers of the New Zealand Engineers (Railway Battalion) wlio wore conveyed by tho 8.3. Janie Seddon to AJahanga Bay on Saturday last have now''settled down to work in earnest. The men arc practically all comfortably housed in tho artillery barracks and speak very well of tho food and treatment they aro receiving. They aro all very keen and ahow'by the manner in which they carry out their work that they are, besides being efficient in tho clerical part of t'heir duties as railway officers, quite efficient in the military section. Sunday was taken up with camp fatiguu and morning parade, but work is laid down for the remainder of the period from 7 a.m. to 0 p.m. Yesterday morning instruction was given in knotting and lashings and in the afternoon, squad, company, and ceremonial drill. A section also connected the camp by telephone. The evening was given up to- lectures and. trestle building. For tho 'remainder of tho period , tho syllabus provides for instruction in tho provision of lire trenches, and overhead cover, riveting, etc., tho erection of bridges, wire entanglements, gyn sheer legs and derricks, stockade, etc., ' together with a course of muskotry instruction. Lieutenant-Colonel Barclay, V.D., is in command, and ho has associated with him on the instructional staff, Captain Edwards, 8.E.; Captain Rose (muskotry instructor), Staff Scrgeant-Major Bale R.E., and Staff Sergeant-Major Meiklc. Captain M'Carthy is camp adjutant and Lieutenant Bond acting for staff officers. Should the weather remain lino both officers and men must benefit considerably by tho coilrso of instruction. On Wednesday morning all tho officers and non-commissioned officers in camp will be conveyed to town to tako part in tho King's Birthday parado with the two local Railway Engineer companies.
