THE C.P.R
The Canadian-Pacific Railway Company, in addition to its vast interests in the railroads of Canada, forming tho principal connection between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans in the Dominion, is also a great shipping corporation. Its fleet comprises 58 steamers aggregating over 230,000 tons, the majority of them being high-class mail and passenger liners. The C.P.R. Company operates between Liverpool and - Quebec, Montreal and St. John (New Brunswick) on the Atlantic side, and also maintains an express service on the Pacific between Vancouver, Hong-Kong, and Yokohama. In the latter service. are the magnificent steamers Empress of Russia and Empress of Asia, built last year by the Fairfield Company. These Ships are each 16,800 tons gross register .and driven by turbines and quadruple screws, they maintain a sea speed of 18 knots. The C.P.R. Company also operates steamships on the Great' Lakes of Canada, and runs fast turbine steamers between Vancouver, Victoria', and Seattle. The Starstad is a-big cargo steamer of 6028 tons gross aud 3561 tons net register. Her dimensions are: Length, 440 ft.; beam, 58,1 ft.; depth of hold, 21.6 ft. She is a comparatively' new steamer, having .been built in 1910. by Messrs. Armstrong, Whitworth, and Co., Ltd., at Ncwcastleon- Tyno, England. Her owners are Messrs. A. F. Klaveness and Co.; Christiania, Norway, who control 23 large cargo steamers. The master of the Storstail was Captain M. A. Andersen.
