Torchlight, ' by John o' Gaunt—Lesbia 3 Won comfortably by two lengths. The winner raced consistently as a twoalthough she did not win a race. Out of eight starts she was five times second and twice third. At Goodwood she was unlucky enough to bump up against The fetrarch, who defeated Mr I ,'TJoel's filly by'Kalf a'dozen lengths; Mr;' 1 J. B. Joel is putting up a great record as a breeder of classic winners. - Last year; he the' One Thousand Guineas and Oaks with the Sundridge < filly Jest,' 1 and this year has repeated the performance with Princess Doric. The latter is stoutly bred, by : Your Majesty (winner of the St. Leger), sou of Persimmon (Derby and St. Leger), by the great St. Simon. Doris (dam of Princess Dorie) is also dam of Mr. Joels Derby winner Sunstar, and' of •White Star, for whom Mr. Sol Green, of Shipley Stud, Victoria, paid £10,000. The Tunner-up, Wassilissa, was liot placed in the One Thousand Guineas, in which race Glorvina (sister to Craganour) separated Princess Dorie and Torchlight, who occupied a similar position in the Oaks. Wassilissa started five- times as a two-year-old. Her only success was in .the -Theale Maiden Two-year-old Plate, worth '.£243, at Newbury, in the autumn. She also acted as runner-un to Heather Moon in the County Maiden Plate at Singfield. - ■ ' ■ - Torchlight won a couple of races- last year—the .Leicester County Foal- Stakes and the Free Handicap, at the Newmarket October Meeting,

Aphaea and Veritas ran over six furlongs together from a . galloping start, the journey taking lmin. 2Gscc. The former shaped more pleasingly than wnen worked fast earlier in the wool" Pretty Jane led Formnal in the early part.of five furlongs, which were covered in lmin. 10 2-ssec., but the latter raced up towards the end, and they finished together.; Peter, Speedometer, and Sveaborg galloped six furlongs in lmin. 24 4-ssec. The two first-named finished a couple of lengths in front of ths' othei. Petei was always apparently master of the situation, and put up one of the most pleasing gallops of the morning, Glcnfmlian (L. G. King) was carrying a good deal more weight than Stevedore or Parable w'hen the trio negotiated a mile together. Parable led to the turn, and thon Glenfinnan drew away, completing the journey in lmin. 56 3-ssec. Glenfinnan was always going well, and' was galloping on at the finish. Czar Kolohol vorked over six furlongs in lmin. 28 2-ssee. Russo showed reluctance to commence, but displayed useful pace when really on tho move! . Bullcr and Wildi Pilgrim negotiated six furlongs in lmin. 2"sec., and R«d Penuou camo away from Optional when running half a mile in sSsec. Bon and Afton Loch finished together, covering five furlong 3 in lmin. 12sec. Caseshot, Rense, Pare Gold, and one or two others got through useful tasks. Silver Dirk was given a turn over the schooling fences, and liia Ora and Red Troon were companions over a circuit of the same country. ' The Jew fenced well when 'doing A round over the hurdles with Lord Frederick, who was inclined to dwell at the obstacles. Kim and Cocoon led Eous, the lastnamed jumping slowly over the hurdles. Cocoon jumped pleasingly, but Kim was oritfenced at a couple of the obstacle. Kim did not rise at the obstacle in front of the stand. He chested the fence, and threw his rider out of the saddle, but a <rood 'recovery was made. Gapon cantered and may be given a run" on tlie pecond day if there is no recurrence of his- trouble (the break'ig of a blood-vessel), which occurred on Thursday.

With the promise of fine weather, there should be a very big attend'ahce. Intending passengers by traiii' should note tho time of departure from tho Thorndon Station. Special' trains leavo at 7.10 a.m. 'and 8.20 a,m. It should be noted that the mail trains do not stop at Otaki either going or coming.. Three well-bred fillies, arrived in Dunodin from England this week (say 3 the Christ Church "Evening News"), Two of them, Brisselette, by Picton—March Jane, and Christmas. Rose, by Heliotrope—Evadne, have gone to Mr. J. B. Reid's stud nt Ellerslic. They arrived there in first-class condition. Bonny Rigg, by Catty Crag—Dhulochan, who has been purchased by Mr. G. L. Stead, ,arriycd in Christchurcli on Friday night.
F.. G. Davis arrived in Wellington from New Plymouth on Saturday night, and will leave for Melbourne by the TJlimaroa on Thursday night. He is taking the hurdle horse Padli (Merriwee —Nulvumaratea) with him. , . Gnome and Scotch Melody leave' Ric-•;artou-for,]Juuedin..to-day,. _ Mount Victoria continues to do good work on the tracks at'Trentham, and he is sure to be one of the most fancied candidates in the .Rahui Handicap at Otaki on Wednesday. On Saturday morning he ran half a mile on , the 'grass-in 515 sec. This was just ono and a half seconds better than Altcar, who did best of the others. It transpires that Encore caught a cold while on the journey from Hawera fo Riccarton. His throat has been blistered, and he will be given an easy tinio of it for a few weekst J. H. Prosser leaves for Otaki this morning, and will take six horses with him. Mr. J.' B. Reid's horses Salzburg and Mowbray are both to go, and will contest the Rahui Handicap. o\Shea will ride Salzburg and M'Arten will be on Mowbray. Pavlova is to start in the.Cup, and'will be ridden by O'Shea. George (Field Battery—Companion) has quite got over his lameness, and will be a runner in the Flying Hack Handicap. Stepney is to start in tho Cup, and will be. ridden by the Fordoll horseman H. Young, who will also pilot George. . ' - 7

Tho Dunedin horseman J. M'Combe experienced a piece of bad luck last week. His house at Wingat.ui caught (ire, and, although no serious damage was done to the building, £141 in notes and several cheques were converted into ashes.' The cheques, of course, are recoverable, hilt the notes, which consisted of fourteen £10 notes and a single, will go to make up tho profit's of a bank or two,
