Mr. T. R. Fleming, chief inspector' under tho "Wellington Education Board, gave a lecture on Tennyson before the Manakau Debating Club , on Wednesday evening. Mr. L. Atkins presided and introduced Mr. Fleming, saying that tho club , was greatly indebted to that gentleman for coming such a' great distance to lecturo to them. Mr. Fleming's lecture, ,which extended over fully an hour and a half, was a lucid and comprehensive exposition tf the life and works of tho great poet. Mr. Fleming spoko of tho poet's works from his earliest efforts to his last poem, classified his works, quoted extracts from various poems, and cited various criticisms of Tennyson's works. The large audience was immensely pleased with the .lecture. -During the evening a number of Tennyson's famous works wero recited and sung. Mr. J. H, An-' drew sang "Too Late,"-Mr. A. M'Bain "Break Break. Break": Mr. Byron Brown Tecitcd "Lady Godiva" and'gave the musical monologue, "Crossing'tho Bar"; Miss Quill played "Tho Brook." A . items were really excellent, and added much to tho enjoyment of the evening. At tho conclusion of the lecturo a hcartv vote of thanks was accorded Mr. Fleming.' A hearty vote of thanks was_ also , accorded the norforrners for their musical and elocutionary items, Mr. Fleming remarking that Jio could not have had 'better, items to illustrate his .subicot had ho tried'all' over wow Zealand.
