THE POULTRY INDUSTRY
EGG-LAYING COMPETITIONS-
WP —— w (By Chantecler.)
A Threatened Invasion. A correspondent, "C.H.5.," Jlastcrton, writes as follows:—"I see that thoro is a considerable influx of eggs from America to New Zealand. What is the meaning of it? Perhaps you call explain? If not, I think thero must bo something working against us. Possibly a syndicate in America is trying to "bear" the market by sending eggs back from there as a "ruse," in order to mako a big harvest for themselves, and to kcop our eggs out of this market for that purpose. This thing must bo carefully handled and fathomed, or, otherwise, it /will bo on-similar lines to meat trusts, etc. There is something wrong, because you cannot make mo believe that America is going to send eggs to New Zealand for a profitable salo when they are importing eggs from us to our advantage. The scheme is absurd °n the face of it, and inquiries 'through our Government officials, ap-. pointed for that purpose, should bo made, and also tho assistance of the member for the district appealed to." r^/y ll correspondent opens up an important subject. The meaning of the u bin S/ • the ■, sanm as ollr own uiien we ship to Vancouver. Our dear season tor eggs (.May and June) is an tiaction, as, at San Francisco, eggs uro cheap m March and April—lud. to Is. a dozen lor best grades. Our e»cs are is. a dozen in September to xNor:v y ! e ' "n th ° ' s , tate3 > ti,e y ar ® " to lho exchange is therejtoro mutual. Tliero is this difference: ■ggs can now be sent to San Francisco duty free, while they pay 'threepence a_dozen duty. & 0 we hold the best end oi the bargain. Our correspondent is wrong an assuming that they ship to us to get even on our shipping to them. We snip usually ,to Vancouver, so that Americans will not worry about tliat. I* is purely a commercial business, just' us it is with* us. Our own should bo to produce lieavily in the winter, and Keep our prices low, so as to make their Irado with us less profitable. \Ve can mako it up by exporting in summer and getting better prices. This will also encourage more consumption in New Zealand. Eggs should never bo above 2s. per dozen. When they are, everyone holds olf, and consequently their supplies accumulate, and down comes our price. At a sale in Christchurch a week ago, eggs were run up to 2s. 6d.. This week producers were glad to take 2s. \\hat advantage is there in this? Better encourage consumption' and get a better average price. Th£ writer does not think that tho shipments referred tc need cause alarm at tho present juncture When the imports show signs, of affecting our prices considerably, wo can soon set tlie'macmnery in motion to arrest them. If New Zealand cannot produce eggs for tHo people at 2s. a dozen it should not prevent importations, and any price less than this can. ' not bo very profitable for 'shippers from I tho other side.
Panama Exnosltlon. We really need information as to flio conditions of tlio Pacific Coast for our oggs during our cheap season. This l , week the Canterbury Egg .Circlo received inquiries from Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, and San Francisco—tlio four chief poi'ts on tho Canadian-American coasts —for eggs to bo' shipped next spring, A good market is promised, and prices offered that better our summer prices. The Panama Exposition oft'ords a, good opportunity for us to'send a man early next year to study the prospects of tho American ports, and the egg market' generally Ho could also take a shipment of Now Zealand pullets representative of outlaying stock. Ho could . write up tho poultry exhibits of stock aAd appliances ia shown in the Exposition, and, above all, givo us a first-hand report of tho Petalcnua poultry industry, one of the wonders of the world to-day. I think what information is available from a district the size of the Hntt Yalloy, and yet it produces as many eggs as the wholo of our' Dominion.! Here is our cliaricol Will poultryUien let it slip? Dear Poultry Food. Mr. J. B. :MerretV (Christchuroh), who is on a visit to iDunedin, \Vas interviewed by ah "Otago Daily Times" .rcporter, and commented on tho Prime Ministers statement regarding the poultry, industry. Ho eays that the shortage of maize is not tho chief cause of dear foods, as maizo for poultry food' is little used except in those .northern districts where Mr. Jlacscy has just visited. A greater obstacle to tho ■ industry, Mr. x Merrett states, is the inequitable prices chargcd for sharps. A? Wellington, after paying freight charges, poultrymen wore asked a short tirao ago to buy sharps at £4 10s. a ton olf the Wellington wharf, while m Christchurch, where it was made, it cost poultrymen £6. ' This was the result ot competition with tho northern mills. Ho suggests either that tho .price of sharps should be. lessened, or tlio duty removed from Australian 'sharps. An .action of this kind by the Government, would do moro for the' poultry industry towards cheapening egg-production than tho growing of maize.
