General Sir lan Hamilton returned from Blenheim yesterday by H.M.S. Pyramus.. This afternoon, Mrs. Godloy is holding a reception, at which officers of the Headquarters Stalf and commanding officers of units of tin- Garrison, wjth their wives, will havo an opportunity of meeting Sir lau Hamilton. After to-day, General Hamilton has no flngagompnts until tho New Zealand Club luncheon on Tuesday. Captain Robert Strang, who recently retired from tho position of Marino Superintendent of the Union Company, passed through Wellington on his way to England yesterday. At a pleasant littlo gathering of captains and officers employed on tho Union Company's steamers which were in port yesterday morning, Captain Strang was farewolled and presonted with a puree of sovereigns. Captain Manning, of tho Maori, made tho presentation, and in doing so spoko of! tho kindly and considerate treatment which masters and officers had always received at Captain Strang's hands. Young for threo months, is leaving-by the Navua on her next trip to settle in tho island of Savu'Savii (Fiji Group), which is owned by Mr. Smithyman's cousins. Mr. Robert Angus, general manager in New Zealand for Thos. Cook and Sons, is-at presont relieving Mr. H. Cramond (local manager), who has been indisposed, for tho pastj. week. The body of tho late Mr. G. N. Grirastone, who was .killed in tie railway accident on the Main Trunk line, will arrive- by train from the north this morning, and will bo interred this afternoon. A service is to bo held at the Basilica at 2.30 o'clock this afternoon, after which the cortege will leave for the Karori cemetery.

Tho death is roportcd of an old identity of Timaru, Mr. W. B Howell, aged 72. Deceased came out to New Zealand in 1864, and has taken a prominent part in tho administration of education, primary and secondary. Ho was familiarly finokou of as the "Father of tho Timaru High School."
