Capital acceptances n'a\u been received lor the otaki meeting, iiuu good raciiiß siiould bo witnesseu tiLro on Wednesday next. As it is a public holiday, tlio executive of the club is expecting a very large attendance ol tiiu public. Special fast trains have b;!ou arranged for with tho liailway Department, and the outward and return journey will be accomplished in two hours. l!ip;htly or wrongly, there seems to be an 'impression locally that there will bo a bin weeding out , when the filial payments for tho Great Northern Hurdles are published. Amongst thoso 'certain to start are: liercola, Sandy Paul, Huffy, Barbwire, 'Idealism, and Merrimax. The last-named is the ruling favourite. At the Clarence River Meeting on May .13,. .Miss Monona, by Field 13.ittfcry—Minola, won the l'lying Handicap, of six furlongs,-in lmin. lu'sec. The lliccarton trainer 11. Emerson has purchased the two-year-old filly ;.Beggar.Maid, by Bezonian. from Strathspey, formerly an inmate of the Chokeboro Lodge stables. She is to ho hacked about for a time, after which she will be,shipped to Melbourne for racing purposes. . -• B. leaves for Sydney, today . which leaves a week later, will consist of Cherubini, CamuhiSj Bimeter (Malster —Comedy), and Memo (Achilles-Rumour). . •■■■ . L. Traill ha been engaged to rido Sandy l'aul in the Great Northern Hurdles. The old steeplechaser, Kaipetipeti, seems to have taken a new lease of life, and recently lie has been responsible for some good schooling tasks at Trentham. His stablo companion, Kelp, has , been unable to pace it with him in a round over the big fences. C. Emerson has been engaged to ride Mount Victoria in the Rahui Handicap, at Otaki, but so far no horseman has been secured for Odessa. The latter still seems to move a bit short in his work, but hie trainer docs not view it seriously, and threo times lately he has gallopod the St. Ambrose horse over a mile cour».
One of the most improved horses racing at Trentham is tho St. AmbrosesMarseillaise gelding Pimpernel.' As a two-year-old Pimpernel was trained by G. Price, but he would not settle down and "seemed to know oiffy two paces, viz., walking and galloping. Ho was turned out for a couplo of seasons, and he has now becoino a very changed animal. His track work is as good as any other horse working at Trenthaui, and on present appearances, C. Pritchard should win races with him next season. Most likely, his owner will decide to give him a race in llio Trial Plate at the Winter Meeting of the Wellington Racing Club. •'Advices from Melbourne state lhat The Nativo is standing up to his work well at Caulfield, and that his trainer, R.. Cameron, intends racing him. at 6ctnb"6f ,;: the' ; minor f;i ttSfe'tnigs '"iiiik't? l month. - • ■ ■ • . - When he left here for the big Easter meetinn at Randwiok, J. Hennah intended to return at once after tho meeting, and bring- Forest Prince with biin. but since then he has abandoned the idea, and ho will probably remain on tbo other side throughout the winter. .. Inimer and her yearling full-sister are now trained by N. Williams at Otaki. At .Trentham, Fashion Plate is jumping tbe big fences very well. If she continues to improve at her present rate of progress she will bo dangerous in any hack steeplechase later on in tho season. ' . A. Oliver will be on Byron and Ermengarde in the Otaki Cup and Rabui Handicap. B. Deeley's mounts will bo Lady Louisa and Makara. At tho first sight, Square Deal, lOst. 111b.. looks to bo badly handicapped in tho Birthday Welter .at Otaki, but it must bo remembered that the Advance horse won at Hawera with only 21b. less ih' the saddle, and that tho class opposed to him at Otaki is very, little better, if any thing, than! he badly defeated at Hawera. The hurdle horseman, W. Adams, usually rides Mr. D. Fraser's. horse, bnt as he will be «nSWKod at Ellerslie, probably the services of A. Oliver will bo requisitioned for Wednesday's race. The Steeplechase field at Otaki includes Silver Monarch and Exotic, both winners at the recent Wanganui fixture, and Leolanter, runner-up to The Spaniard in the Hawke's Bay Steeplechase last Juno. The only other winner* is Grit Lawless, .who scored so unexpectedly at Trentham in October last.
According to the Auckland "Star" tho Euroclydon gelding Hautwe will not fulfil his engagement in the Great Northern Steeplechase. Hantero has been troubled with slight inflammation, and his owner is not prepared to take any risks with him.
The cros3-country horseman, A; J. M'Flynn, lias a ride in every jumping race at the forthcoming A.K.C. Winter Meeting. Ono owner was so anxious to sccuro M'Flynn's services exclusively that ho offered him a losing ride for each mount ho was engaged' for, if ho would cancel his engagements, and onlv ndo his horse. The offer, however, was refused. .
On fliursday, June 4, at 9.30 a.m., Messrs. Dalgoty and Co., under instructions from Mr. Hira Pnrata, will hold a sale of thoroughbreds at Otaki. Particulars aro advertised in this issuo.
