Work will bo commenced in a few days' time on tho extension of tlio Aim 'Ahu Road, which will bring a number of settlers into better communication with tlio Wanganui River service. When this, contract is finished it is probable that- another will be let linking up the river to Kai Iwi on tho railway lino. • Provided that there is no influx from other districts casual labourers in Wanganui ' should be able to got through tho coming winter satisfactorily. Tho Labour Department reports that the" skilled trades j>ro keeping going. Only a few men are out of employment, and these only temporarily.' . At the Supremo Court yesterday, Edward Ncwing, of Wnnganui, claimed £350 from George Hanson Foote, of Foilding, for money advanced on mortgage. i\o\vs reached Carterton on Monday morning that a fatality had occurred at JVlartinboroiigh on Sunday, whereby an old man, James Andrews, lost his life. Together with John Lyons, he occupied a hut, both being okl-age pensioners. On Sunday morning early Lyons left the' hut, and when ho returned ho found tho place in flames. He did bis host to drag Andrews out, but was bealen bach by tho lire. Andrews was incinerated. The polico were informed and the District Coroner communicated with, and an inquest arranged. - •
