REPLY TO MR. CORKILL.
feu, At a meeting of tne oftieials of St. lauls JVlotlindist Church hold <m Ihursday, May 2], the attention of th« officials was drawn to a letter which ;(f ,I peared in your issue of Mav IS over the signature of Mr. T. E." Corkhill containing a most malicious attack on our minister, the f(,-v. f>\ W. Jiovs. ' As the writer claims to be a representative Methodist layman, his criticism may tarry weight with those who do not know Mr, Boys. Wo wre therelore directed by the meeting to repudiate the attack made by J(r. Corkhill a !r'-\° ox P rcss the indignation of tlie oflicials and members of St Paul's Church at a Methodist layman c vm suggesting that the cancellation of the commission of our minister would with the approval of the church to which he belongs. Knowing our minister as We do, we are confident that he has acted from a sheer sense of duty, and therefore merits our praise as a church and not our condemnation.—Wo are, etc., G. H. BENNETT, - J- A. -M'LEAVBY, Circuit Stewards. J. CUNNINGHAME, , Society Steward. St. Paul s Methodist Church, Parmerst-on North, 22-5-14! .Sir,—After reading tie correspondence and hearing reports from Territorials, it is impossible to believe that everything in the garden at eaxnt> was lovely. When I read the letter in vour paper written by Sir. T. E. Corkhill. I telt he had gone out of his way to do the reverend gentleman' an injustice possibly not intentional. To say the least, his reference to dress suits was ■ misleading. These are the facts; A Minister of the Crown was advertised to lecture at Hawera. The committee or chairman responsible advertised dress eirote reserved for ladies and gentlemen wearing dress suits. This distinction was resented by a largo section of the public. At the time I was steward to the liev. Mr. Boys, and heard him speak against the action of the committee. In consequence" of the strong protest, the cam* mitteo recognised the mistake, and the condition was withdrawn,. I 'foci sure that the majority of your readers will say the protest was right, seeing; the lecture was under the auswees °f tlra Dominion Show. I wish to assure Mr. T. E. Corkhill that a large section of the laymen of the Methodist Church is not m sympathy with the- tons of his letter. —I am, ctc.,
E. DIXON, Methodist Layman. Haivm,
