Nevertheless,' the boys did march exceedingly well. All tho ceremonial drill was performed with reasonable precision, the first march past in column of companies being very good. On his round of inspection] General Hamilton was accompanied by the Hon. James Allen (Minister of Defence), tho officers of his own staff, General Godley, and officers of the New Zealand Staff Corps. On parade there woro 42 officers and 1272 cadets, and also the Karori, "Suburbs, and Highland Rifle Clubs, the Fifth Regimental Band, and,the Highland Pipe Band. "A Proud Day For Mβ," 'After presenting the cups, General Hamilton oriefly addressed the cadets He remarked that it had been a proud day for him. It had given him a-great dnal of pleasure to see so many younf citizen soldiors march past, and to pr£ sont tho beautiful cups to the winners Tho march' past, if appeared to him,' had not been easy, owing to tho soft and.slippery state of the ground, but the soveral companies had dono it vory well. Of course, it was always easier for college and city corps to become proficient in drill, but ho had noticed fino country corps march past extremelv well. As for tho physical drill, he had certainly seen nono better in Now Zealand than he had seen that-day. (Cheers.) The sii?ht of so many youiig soldiors reminded him, of the days in Greeco- and in Rome when the youthoF those'countries wore'trained in the arts,of .war. . So long as. this training ■continued; those empires ramoined eafe^
but as soon as the system was departed tram they rapidly began to' drift towards the breakers. As n soldier of experience ho would say that New Zealand, having fairly started to mako herBclt safo by training her youth to defend their land, would remain safo for at least this generation. Ho thought 'that thoy could all congratulate themselves on having had such .1 (ino afternoon, and such a lino attendance of'citizens. (Applause.)
, Complimentary Chears. While the cups were being presented, discipline* in the lines, which had been altogether remarkably good, was so far relaxed that the several companies gave gentle, suppressed cheers when one of their own number was being honoured. Afterwards tlio Mayor (Mr. J. I'. Liiko) called for three cheers for General Hamilton. The. cheers were heartily given by the citizens present, and the cadets, evidently a little uncertain as to what they ought to do, joined in a little uncertainly. Then Captain Powles called for cheers from the brigade for General Hamilton, and these were given very heartily. Captain I'owlee also called for three cheers for Mrs. Godley, . and the ladies who had, provided the cups for competition, and these cheers were also given with a right good will. As Sir lan Hamilton left tho parade ground to drive away tho troops cheered him continuously. Tho Inspec-tor-General has never made any secret of the fact that he likes tho cadets, and it was very evident that the .cadets liked him. Tho General and his staff officers were guests of tho Wellington Club at dinner on Saturday evening. This morning he leaves, with General Godley, to inspect the Wairarapa , Cadets, returning tomorrow night to Wellington.
