THE TURF.

NORTH OTAGO MEETING SECOND DAY. (Bjr Telcernph.-Bpocinl OotraraondcnU m m OamarujJlay 22. . J-iio weather was fair for tno concluding day of tho North Otago Jockey Club races to-day, but tho course was heavy and slippery from the overnight's rain. The- running was good, and tho fields large. Tho sum of £9905 went through tho totalisator. against £12,235 for the correspondiii" day of last year, or £10,594 10s. for tho meeting, against £23,531 last year. ! Merrio Valet, who was • making his iirst appearauco at tho meeting, was a good favourite in the Pacific Hurdles, but after being well placed throughout ho was beaten into third placo bv Salathiel. who ran off yesterday, and Margo. Iho latter started second favourite, and ran right up to her first day's form. Pure Gold was withdrawn in favour of Cardiff, who was purchased over-night by Mr. J. Flaneur, and Kim foil. At the barrier in tho Shorts Handicap, Charlotte gave trouble, and was put on tho outside. The dispatch was a good one, and Lady Lowburn soon took charge from Mcssena. At tho homo turn, Charlotte ran up to tho leaders, and, finishing strongly, she won by three lengths from Atheldana, who also came fast, and cut Lady Lowburn out of second place by half a length. Franganui was fourth.

The Cornet, Magdala, and the Choke- | bore bracket, Glenfinnan and Stevedore, were supported in that order for the Victoria Handicap, one mile. At tho jump away the two first-mentioned were out in front, but they were allowed to drop in behind, and Aphaea took charge. At tho half-milo Wairaki, who bad been lcfy badly, rushed to the front, and led into tho straight with Teviotdale. Tho latter was just clear of Mosgiel, Glenfinnan, and The Cornet at tho distance, where Teviotdalo got stopped. Troon then cams fast on the outside, ,and won by threeparts of a length 'from Tho Cornet, who caino again. Glenfinnan was two lengths away, followed by Wairaki, Teviotdale, and Mosgiel. The little-fancied Pretty Jane ran in. a winner in tho Grange Handicap by two lengths from Miss Finland and Sartomart, with Trireme close up. At the start Firmhold and Vanna led, but tho former did not. hold his position, and Vanna went on alone. Entering tho straight, Trireme and Miss Finland joined issues, and though they shook off Vanna, they succumbed to a good run by Pretty Jane. Pride-o'-Clutha got out badly, and the favourite, John Barleycorn, was nover dangerous. Gregory gave a lot of bother at tho barrier, and was left.

Another turn up came to light in the Welter Handicap, when Golden King, who bails from Southland, galloped home ahead of tho field after being tailed off in the earlier part of ■ the raco. At the start Buller,a good favourite, mado the running from Eaglestone and a bunched field, with Briar Patch in tho middle of tho field. As they raced into the straight. Merry Lass ran up to Bailor, and Briar Patch improved her position. The two then had to give way to Golden King, who camo with a wet sail, and won by thrco lengths. Glenowl was half a length further back. Tho winner is owned by Mrs. T. Morello, who also owns tho previous winner. The pair are trained by P. T. Hogan. With tho withdrawal of Clynelish, tho ■Members' Handicap looked tho best of -good things for Peter, and so it proved. Tho Southland horso took chargo at tho barrier rise, and was not headed. Golden Morn ran np to him after going a furlong, and raced alongside him to the bottom of tho straight, whero tho favourite came away. Palisade mado a latp run, but had no chance of catching the winner, and in tho end he was only a half-length in front of John Barleycorn, wlm was making his.fourth appearance at tho meeting.
