Mr. James Bell, of 'I'wyford, has honated £25 towards tho purchase of tho Hawke's Bay A. and I J . Society's new showground at Tomoana. IVANGANUI. In connection with tho Mangamahu Hotel fire, it transpires that some window curtains early in the evening camo into contact with a lighted candle. Tho blaze was, it was thought, extinguished, but at eleven o'clock it was discovered to be raging again. Efforts to subdue tho conflagration wero then futile, and the big building was soon reduced to ashes. Tho post office and store adjoining were saved with great .difficulty, and only owing to a lucky change in the wind at the last moment. PALMERSTON. A settlement out of court on terms filed in court was announced in the Supreme Court action of Spiers and Gibbs against Walter F. G. Scott for £442 19s. 9d., on a dishonoured promissory note, defendant counter-claiming £700 damages. His Honour remarked: "I find that the lawyers of the Dominion are anxious, to bring about what the French call a rapprochement between tho clients, and I am very glad the case has been settled."
Mr. R. M'Nab's selection for the Hawke's Bay seat has greatly interested local people, who regarded him as a possible candidate here. Tho remaining candidates mentioned locally for the Opposition aro Messrs. Crabb and Spooncr. Tho Education Board's report mentions tho appointment of Mr. G. A. Lundie, recently of tho Palmerston North High School, as assistant at tho Bulls High School, also Mr. W. H. Burges, College Street School, to tho headmas.tership of Fitzherbert. PAHIATUA. The annual social of the Pahiatua Fire Brigade was held in tho Foresters' Hall on Wednesday evening. The ai* tendanco was good and tho evening was most enjoyable. Dancing was indulged in, whilst cards and games were provided for non-dancers. During tho evening tho Mayor (Mr. Condy Crewe) presented medals to tho folkiwing:—Lieutenant Parkes, ; nine years' service; Foreman Stokes, attendance medal. Competition, medals wero also presented to Firemen Punch and L. Stokes. Captain Wallis, w;ho has seen 17 years', service, will receive a further two-years' service bar on Juno 30. In tho course of his remarks tho Mayor said that tho brigade deserved congratulation for their present stato of efficiency. Twenty-livo years ago, in Pahiatua, there was only a bucket or two to fight ,a fire, but now, with a modern water supply and a smart brigade, Pahiatua had every reason to feel proud. In competitions tho brigade had done well. Tho Mayor concluded by wishing the brigade and Captain Wallis every success.
FEATHERSTON. At the monthly meeting of Loyal Unity Lodgo (Oddfellows), the following officers were nominated for tho next term:—N.G., Bro. A. C. 'Pricker: V.G., Bro. J. W. Holland; E.S., Bro. W. Tinney. Certificates'wero issued entitling two brethren to receive V.Gi' and N.G. degrees. An entertainment in connection with the Methodist Church was held; in tho Town Hall here on Tuesday evening. Songs and recitations were contributed by Mr. Martin, Mesdames "Wickens and Bull, and Misses Judd, Machon, and M. Davidson. A farco entitled "Mr. Caudlo Advertises for a Wife," was also played, those taking part being Messrs. Martin, A. Peppcrill, A. Jury, F. Slade, and Misses I'epperill, Morrison, Ellis, and Judd. MASTERTON. The Masterton collie dog trials wero concluded yesterday, in bitter weather. The results were as fo'lowLong head: 1). Sutherland's Flo, 26 points, 1; Alex. Duffy's Boy, 23 points, '2; It. W. Hensou's Tug, 22 points, 3. Short head and yarding: D. Sutherland's Flo, 36s points, 1; D. Sutherland's Northern Star, 34 points, 2; L. M'Kinnon's Don, 33 Points, 3. The special competition between dogs worked by the Mayor of Masterton (Mr. J. 31. Coradino) and Mi G. E M.l*., was won by tho fust-named. Sir Joseph Ward paid a flying visit to Masterton yesterday afternoon. Ho proceeded to Carterton in tho evening, where he met members of the Opposition Party in private. CARTERTON. Mr. _ Coleman Phillips has consented to deliver an address on the proposed Rimutaka deviation at tho Council Chambers, Carterton, on Wednesday next, under the auspices of the Carterton Tradesmen's Association. On Wednesday evening next tie Carterton branch of the St. John Ambulance Association will meet t<? hear a lecture given by Dr. Johnston. An appropriation of, £300 by ballot will take placo on Thursday evening under the auspices of the Wairarapa Terminating Building Society. E. Tunnicliffo has been elected captain of tho Senior Hockoy_ Club, and C. Foster captain of tho juniors. OTAKI. Another hockey club has been formed ill Otaki, and will be known as the Tainui Club, colours to he black and white. Mr. Fred. Ryder has leased part of the Pahiko estato for a period of two' years. DYERVILLE. The Dyervillo Hall was opened on Wednesday by Sir Walter Buchanan, M.P., who made a most interesting speech. Mr. H. Daysh (chairman) and Mr. A. D. M'Leod also spoke briefly. Mr. M'Leod mentioned tbo fact that tlie land on whicli tlie new liall was built was purchased by his father over half a century ago. l'lie hall was packed by a most appreciative audience, and everyone appeared to be enjoying themselves. Tho Martinborough Band played selections. - Mr. Harry Hall sang a number of items, and was recalled repeatedly. Mr. Stewart, Mr. Simpson, Mr. A. D. M'Leod, Mr. and Mrs. Daysli, Mr. Holt Harris, Mr. Moss, and Mr. C. Smith also contributed items during tho concert. The accompaniments wero played by Mrs. Campbell Smith, who also played tho overture. After the concert refreshments wero handed round. A danco followed, tho music being supplied by Mrs. Nicholson and Air. M'Guire. Visitors were present from all parts of the Wairarapa.
