THE MERITS OF SINGLE SHIFTS. Br Teleirr&Dh—Press Association --Gopyrieht (Rec. May 21, 8.15 p.m.) Sydney, May 21. Tho Northern Miners' Wages Board, m its award, refused the miners' demands for increased rates for tlio afternoon shift. Tho Maitland collieries' award, which has a currency of three years, is generally against the men. Judge Edmunds. delivering the awlrd, said that the working hours of coalminers might reasonably lie limited to ono shift, with advantage to the whole community, provided that a supply of coal to m'eet the public demand could be maintained bv 'one shift.
The _ Government lias appointed a Commission to intuiirc into tlio abolition of the tliircl shift.
