'The Wanganui Jockey Club's Winter Meeting opened to-day under unfitvourabjo conditions. Heavy rain fell in tho morning, but cleared up after the first rate. A bitterly cold southerly blowing right across the course into tho stands made matters anything but pleasant. Tho going was. holding, ami tho attendance was considerably affected. Notwithstanding tho veritable South Polo weather, tho totalisator showed an uicreaso, the figures being £19,783, against £18,613 for the first day of tho wjjiter .mooting last year. G. Marchant, rider of Huia, in tho Century Hurdles, sustained a broken collarbono tlihmgh his'mount falling. Ward, rider ofjWaldomar, was also slightly injured.
