PREVENTION OF CRUELTY.
THE NEW INSPECTOR
Captain J. Henry, the now Inspector ror tho Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, who has just assumed his new duties in Wellington, informed a Dominion reporter that ho' accepted tho "Queen's shilling" in 1878, and was duly enlisted in tho 7th Dragoon* Guards, then stationed in Dublin. After a few months in barracks there tho regiment was translerrcd to Aldersliot, and later to Norwich. In 1882 Arabi Pasha mado trouble on the burning sands of Egypt, and the 7th Dragoon Guards sailed away to Alexandria to mako inquiries and administer reproof. They were concerned in the battle of Tel el Kebir, but had little to do, as tho whole campaign was a brief one, covering only some four months. From Egypt the regiment was dispatched to India in 1883, and were there—at Mahoo, Umbala, Muttra, and other stations—for somo ten years. Tho year the regiment went to India saw Mr. Henry promoted to bo sergeant-major, a position ho retained until severed lus connection with tho regiment. In 1894 they were ordered back to Egypt, where troublo was threatened through the Khedive being discontented with his lot, but there, was nothing doing, so tho regiment embarked for England. The blast of war sounded in South Africa in 1899, and tho Dragoons wero ordered to tho front, and saw a good deal of service one way and another. In May, 1900, Mr. Henry was appointed to the South African Constabulary with tho commission of . lieutenant,, and after ono year's service was.promoted to bo captain. At the eiid of the war he was mado Inspector of Police and Commandant of tho Hoopstad district, in the Orange Freo State, a position he' re- : tained until responsible Government was established in 1908. Tho Boer Government offered him the position, at a reduced salary,which ho declined, and'he then came to Now Zealand and engaged in fanning and other pursuits in the country. Captain Henry has tho following medals Egypt (1882), Queen's and King's South African long service (22 years), and good conduct, and the Khedive star. Two of .Captain Henry's sons are sergoant-majors m the Permanent Forco at Gisborne.
