SIR IAN HAMILTON'S TOUR

PALMERSTON CADETS. TACTICAL WORK CRITICISED. (By Telesrapli.—Prese Association.] _ Palmerston, May 18. This afternoon Sir lan Hamilton, accompanied by General Godloy, inspected No. 6 area group of cadets at Fitzherhert. The hoys assembled at the show grounds, and marched to the scene of the manoeuvres, <i distance of about three miles. Hero attack and defence were carried out, 1036 cadets taking part. The manoeuvres were watched carefully by tho General. He criticised the delay on tho prfrt of 'some of the companies in the attack, and also tho holding out of the scouts till tho last, as they would all have been shot' in actual war. Ho considered that the boys liad carried out their duties well, and compjimontcd them accordingly. Tlio presentation of cups, won for shooting fluring tho season, then took place, this ■being followed by a march past, tho cadets then returning to Palmefston to entrain for their homes. A contingent of veterans, 16 in all, wero also inspected. There was a largo attendance at the 'A. and P. Hall to extend a welcome- to General Hamilton this evening. The Mayor, Mr. J. A. Nash, presided. General Hamilton was ivelcomed !>y tho Mayor and Mr. D. Buick. M.P., and expressed himself as well pleased with tho display given by the cadets. He contended that, the anxiety of those at Home who had relatives fighting in the early stage of the South' African war was responsible for tho springing up of activity on military matters, and pinee tlio war that feslinsr hart not Wn allowed to dio out. General Hamilton's address was partly in br.raorons rein, particularlv his referencesto the .v.iitherly gale which greeted him at Tnlcapau, when ho drooped in there on his Tiay down from Hnstings to-day. General Godley referred to the enthusiasm shown by Palmerston in rrilitary matters, also to the town' Icing an important'coiitro for tho headquarters "of tho Wellington district, and congratulated Colonel Prina;lo and ethers on being responsible for tho in augural ion of the annual military tournament, which had proved a groat success. .
