THE WANGANUI SEAT
The presence of Mn.'F. Pißani in the contest, for the Wanganni scat is certain to assure a vigorous struggle. •_ His address at Wanganui last evening shows that he has lost ; none of his old force, and as has ] always been the case with him he dofis not move along hackneyed lines nor in old grooves. Ho is..possessed of the progressive- spirit, backed by a practical mind, and in consequence is able to leave the field of gcncrali- : ties, which is the favourite debut-' ing ground of so many politicians, ami indicate in detail the- manner in which he would help the world along.- , Tims, for instance, while so many well-meaning people are talking sympathetically' about tho necessity for "doing something" to improve the lot of the casual wharf worker, Mk. PiiiANt comes forward with a definite scheme for giving practical effect;, to these good intentions. Ho is a clear and shrewd thinkers and on questions relating to land sett-lenient and education is especially w«ll informed. Indeed, his return to Parliament would materially strengthen the ranks of members who have interested themselves in educational matters, as well as adding a live worker to that muck under-rated section of members which renders invaluable service ia an unobtrusive way in as* sisting to knock Bills into shapeduring their passage through Committee. Whan in Parliament some years ago no member perhaps was more feared by the late Mr. Sedbqn as il detector of flaws in slip-shod legislation, and few indeed could compare with him as a critic when he laid himself out for that role. But ho was-con-structive as well as destructive, nnd therein lay the cause of much of hia success in.Parliament. As the llerorm candidate for the Wanganni'seat he can be relied -on to make the contest an interesting one to all concerned, •and should he provo successful Wanganui will have the 11 vest and ablest member that has represented it since the days of John Ballance.
