INTERESTING PLAY IN SPITE . :V , ; GALE .vf-f ; ;F- the' mud

'"■ X cold:,, biting gale swept tho fields of play o;t Saturday, making things most unpleasant fur players ami spectators■■ alike. ..Despite these drawbacks some good games were witnessed, especially at the new ground at South Kilbiniie. Here last season's clinmnions (Tnistle) just managed to defeat Brooklyn by one- goal after a willing "no." On tho same ground Diamonds and V.M.C.A. played a drawn game—one goal each.' some tall scoring was indulged in by Corinthians and Hospital. The former team had a runaway victorv over Hovers, and Hospital inflicted a decisive defeat on Swifts to the tune of six goals to. jiii', Odco again th« i'eione-'W'andercrs fixture had to be abandoned on account of tho bad state of tho ground at .Petone. Following ..aro tho results of. the matches played :— Thistia .3 Broshlyn 2 Diarrratt'fs } V.M.C.A 1 C&rinfitfarts .... 6 Rovers 0 Hospital e swifts ft THSSTL.E—BROOKLYN. Thistle had their work cut out to beat Brooklyn, tho young senior club fiom the lull suburb giviug of their best under trying weather conditions. Bight from tlio jump Brooklyn attacked stroug-y, and Thistles were kept strictly on the defensive. At last tho Blues got going, and Bissett looked like scoring, but Brooklyn's backs wore safe. After a considerable amount of give ami fake play, liisaitt again secured on tho left wing. Ho took the ball down field and centred nicety. Miller (right-back), who was playing well up, taught the ball oil -tiio wing and landed it in the nut. Thistle kept up the attack, and Ucitl (emitro-hali), seeing an opening, shot liird. Strickland (Brooklyn's 'keeper) was tackled, but lie managed to save with difficulty. Brooklyn now attacked strongly, and gave their oponents an anxious time in their own half. The bail was passed out to Burnett, on the left wing. Tho fleet little outside-icfl. was off like a shot, and when ha lisd managed to get well down-field he centred to Davis, who put the finishing touches on a line piece of piny. The score was one goal all when half-time was. called.

On resumption of play Thistle attacked vigorously, and from a molce in front of Brooklyn's goal, Tvror managed, to put the ball through. Thistle, 2; Brooklyn, 1. For some considerable time after this play was of an even character, till suddenly Brooklyn's forwards got away together. IJkj result was that Burnett-made the scores oven with a capital shot. Subsequently Thistle livened up considerably, and forced their oponcnts back yard by yard. Both sides fought strenuously. At last the Blue,* were swarded a free-kick about six yards out from goal. Reid was Entrusted with the kick, and ho made no mistake. Thistle, 3; Brooklyn, 2. Towards the end of the game* a sensational piece of piny happened. Harnett, with the'ball at tee, got away on his own. He had a clear run, with nobody i» front of him save the Thistle goal-koopei. Away the little outsideleft went at tap speed, with four or live Thistle men galloping behind him. It was a great race, and it looked as if the Brooklyn man would win, but when lie tried to shoot ho was overtaken, and a pertain score was averted. A few minutes later the whistle blew, and the game ended in a win for Thistle by tiireejwials to two. Mr. j. B, Paten was rel'oim

DIAMONDS—Y.M.C.A. After a most interesting match on the new ground, Diamonds managed to draw with i.AI.C.A., tho sec-res being one goal cash. A howling southerly gala was blowing right across the field, and it seriously interfered with -the pkiy. On account of the high wind the game was lemarkftnlo for rapid changes. The ball was transferred from one end of the iiotd to the other at a great rate, and bcth sides made strenuous efforts to score. It was. evident that Y.M.C.A. were in splendid form, and they made the pace from the outset. Accurate shooting was out of the ([ueistiow, but there was some degree of combination shown by both sides. Towards the end of the first spell it was observed that Diamonds were picking up their comhination, but the whistle blew for half time without any score being registered, _At the outset of the second half ' Y.M.C.A. pressed their opponents hard. Their splendid set of forwards swooped down the centre, showing good combination. Hoaro (outside-lett) put the finishing touches on an excellent piece of ] play by lauding the ball in the net. The I .Blacks fought hard to score, but at this juncture- the wind had shifted a point or two in favour of Y.M.C.A. Diamonds attacked strongly, however, ami at Inst their persistence was re--worded. A penally was given against Y.M.C.A. for a foul. .Kestlo placed the ball for the kick at goal .mud the wind shifted it. He replaced the hall after the referee had blown his whistle. There were cries from the spectators protesting against this action, and a Y.M.O.A player kicked the bail. Tho referee allowed it to he replaced, however, and the kick resulted in n goal. Diamonds, J.; Y.M.C.A., 1. From now on to the end the Yellows attacked strongly, but Diamond's defence was sound, and ilia game- ended in a draw, Mr. J. Leddy was referee. ' /

I . SWIFTS AND HOSPITAL, Swifts met Hospital at i'orirua. both teams being one man short, The rain, which had been falling steadily since i the previous night, ceased a few minutes ; before play commenced, • The ground was sodden, and in places boggy. j Hospital attacked early, ana'in fivo mjmttcs of the kick-off had secured three goals—all being obtained by i Hughes. From this on, however, Swift's put up a better fight, and for 'a time the IVirua men were hard put, to it. : Ross and Balks showed up well,- as did I'enyington bet'.veen the posts, who was instrumental in saving many lino shots. Corners were numerous, and at length Hughes again .scored with a shot fully 20 yards out. I'orirua, 4; Swifts, nil". This closed tho first spell. On the resumption of play Hospital, who were seemingly quito at home in the mud, forced matters. Skinner missed a rather good centre by Daly, but the nature of the ground was morethan an excuse for this. Cobb, Forinut's 'keeper, was called on to save once or twice, but at no stage of tho game was the attack on Porirua dangerous. Penliugton was conspicuous in a brilliant save from a stinging shot sent, in by Heath. Hughes came to the lore once again, ami scored his fifth goal from a centre bv Daly. Close on the call of time Daly, after a fairly good run, sent in a low, fust shot that ''"downed" Pen!i»gt!,jn, and closed the inline with ihc- scores': I'orirua, 0Swifts, nil. Mr. A. E. Wells was the referee. . CORINTHIANS AND ROVERS. Both Corinthians and Hovers had difficulty in obtaining a full complement for their respective teams. Fifteen minutes was taken remedying this, and even then Corinthians took tho field otto man short. Tho Basin Reserve was ' the scene of conflict, and the ground was in places mere than sodden. The men of both teams wore willing, however, and they ployed a ganM keenly enjoyed , •by a couple of hundred spectators. Pass- ,

ing was anything but accurate, but .this was not ino i.ault oi the plnycii, for once the ball'lett ilw foot of tfio kicker it became the plaything of the wind, and remained so" until it "earthed"

agasn. Corinthians won tiio toss and played with tho wind', They wore soon pUiy"•n aggressively, nml at an opportune moment Roberts and Rutter made, a line run down the held, tall i,t too. With rather line judgment Butter passed to tho left-win;; Ai'Shea), who sent the bull horse. Corinthians, 1; Rovers, nil. At tins slago Corinthian's eleventh mfi... turned up, ;ind was relegated to the goal posts. Corinthians combined well, and itiekerby tool; the ball, deliberately dribbled, and shot fast and low to Roberts. A low-lying ground shot by Roberts followed, and the- scores were: Corinthians, '_'; Rovers, nil. Trouljio How loomed for tho scorers, and a solid, well-maintained rush by tho "AVhito" men resulted in Burke receiving a severe, kick on the chest. He was "out" but temporarily, and Corinthians set. out to put tip h score, From a throw in to Corinthians Rickerby got .the ball, and scored. Corinthians, 3; Rovers, nil. Within a few minutes Rickerby again scored from a free-kick.. Corinthians, ■!; Rovers, nil. Before tho half-time snell one other Corinthian player was injured. Bollard, while tukinjj' a pass, was charged, and obliged to retire. He returned, however, in about live minutes.

Tho second spell saw Rovers assisted by tho wind, but the odds, -even with this not inconsklertti.de help, were too much, and soon O'Shos, taking a pass ficm Roberts, easily defeated tho goalkeeper, Corinthians, 5; Rovers, nil. The last goal of tho game was scored by O'Shea, who, receiving the ball nftor a fruitless attempt to score by Gibs»n, wnt it between tho posts with no small degree of accuracy. Mr. C.
