CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES AT KARORI DISMAL WEATHER ' BUT SOME BRIGHT GAMES University 7 Karon 3 Metropolitan ... ? Wellington 1 United 9 m-.y.wm 0 Insurance, a bye. The hockey ehamiponship games were continued at Karon on Saturdav afternoon in weather that was, to sav the least of it, dismal. The unfavourable weather, however, fortunately did not detract from the- quality of'the play, and though in two of the games there was big, unbalanced (coring, there was, nevertheless, plenty to interest in the battles. The first appearnce of United 111 the contest was naturally awaited with interest, but pitted against the inexperienced M.Y.M.I. team, who were further handicapped by having only ten men, and one a substittue, United simply had a romping victory. University, who apparently have made a rapid recovery from their rather feeble display in their first season's game, gavo an attractive display against Karon. Metropolitan had the best of things with Wellington, yet only snafehvictory by a one-goal margin. Tho following are the details of the various ganes:—
UNIVERSITY-KAROR], A tame opening characterised this Same, bufc the calm little prelude was only the forerunner of a gradual crescendo to an exciting, eager battle. A crowd of suburban supporters rendered a rather one-sided accompaniment on the line. After about ten minutes or so, Karori fired the first shot—that is, tho first successful shut, Broofcer centring to Lewor, who netted. University were not long logins behind, but apparently the Ivarori backers on the line did not agree with the referee's decision in awarding the evening point. Quite naturally, they spurred their representatives to greater efforts. This seed of encouragement germinated into a decisive goal, that once more placed the, suburbanites in the lead. University rallied at this,, and pressed hotly, and G. Strack bagged as fine a braes , of goals as was scored in the game. : Immediately on recommencing, University further reinforced their position, Hostick scoring. Then catuo Karon's turn again, and they were rewarded for their persistence, G. Davies scoring. Play continued even tiii, as some one put it, "something happened," and what a fall there was I The University forwards were galvanised into action, and romped over the suburbanites, incidentally placing a trio of goals to their credit. 6. Strack (2) and Hostick were tho scorers. The game ended; University. 7; Karori, 3, Mr. Langford refcrecd. METROPOLITAN-WELUWGT.ON. These two teams, both winners in the previous championship games, naturally battled hard to gain the leading points. Metropolitan was the bettor team oil tho day's play, and came home victorious bv'the narrow margin of two goals to one. Wellington were early at work . in quest of goals, and soon a rather lino effort b.y Griffiths just missed tho net. From this to tljp end of the spell tho game progressed most evenly, Once Sheoran shot the ball home, but the ( goal was disallowed, the scorer being penalised. ■ .
Metropolitan evidently realised at tho opening of the second spell that things had not gone exactly an" their favour, and so attacked with relentless energy. For a time Wellington's defence prevailed against them, and then Metropolitan became tori determined altogether, and two goals were scored, each within a short time of .the other. Taplin secured the first, afid Keys the second. The finish of the game was exciting, Fletcher having scored for Wellington. Vain efforts were made to equalise, but the shrill notes of the whistle proclaimed tho {pa roe at an end with tho score 2—l'm Metropolitan's favour. Mr. J. W. Gendall was the referee. UNITED-M.Y.M.f.
Uniteds were all too good for the M.Y.M.1., and left the Held «.asy victors by nine goals to nil.' Tho winners wore early to the fore, but though the ball was worked past tho defence with case', the score openings did Hot materialise, as they were .not taken advantage of. Stewart was tho first to score for United, then Lyons scored, and before half-time three goals followed quickly, Clark (2) and Boyd scoring., _ Uniteds' eager quest after a substan* tial victory led them to attack with vigour, with the result that still another quartet of points were, placed to their credit, Boyd, Clark, and Lyons participating iir that total. The game conlcuded: United, 9; M.Y.M.1., 0. Sir. C. S. Falconer controlled the game.
No Ladies' Games. A big effort was made to continue tho ladies' names, kit the weather was against such being done. Indeed, the fair stick-wiolders took to the sodden fields with every intention of playing, but tho rain was not in a chivairotis mood, and literally drenched:, the. ladies, driving; them back to the dressing-shod! Saturday's fixtures bold good for the coming Saturday. Junior, United simply ran over Metropolitan, scoring; sixteen goals to their opponents nil.
