Tho "Daily Chroniolo" states that Miss Mary Gaunt, the author, is returning from Taiyuen Fu, owing to threatened disturbances. The journal adds that the interior of China will bo no placo for a foreigner, especially a solitary woman./
Miss Mary Gaunt (Mrs. Miller) is a (laughter of tho late Judgo Gaunt, of jr e l. bourne. She was born «t Chiltern. Victoria, and as a girl she contributed to tho Argus" and the "Ago" in Melbourne. In 189 i she married Dr. H. T,. Miller, of Warrnambool, and, on the death of her husband in 1900, she went to England to make her livelihood by her pen. After many vicissitudes, sho succeeded in making enough money to travel to We.it Africa, and since thon she has travelled extensively in little-known lands. Sho is tho author of a number of books. Taiyncn-fu is a walled city, the capital of thn province of Shansi, on .the .main road leading from Central China northwards to Tatung. The city has a population of, roughly, 50,000, and there aro powder mills and a cannon foundry thero.
