THE PUBLIC SERVICE.
SALARIES & SUPERANNUATION. Cortain concessions which have recently been mado under the authority of the Public- Service Commissioner to employees in sovoial Stato Departments wero explained by the Hon. H. H Rhodes yesterday in so far as they relato to Departments under his control. The maximum salaries of mental hospital male, attendants have been raised, and in addition it has been decided that the emoluments such as house and lodging allowance of officers 'if tho Department in tho Clorical and General Divisions, who aro drawing salaries of £300 a year or less shall be paid as an addition to salary, in order that they may bo included in tho computation for purposes of superannuation. These additions will bo refunded by the officers concerned, and credited to the maintenance account. This, Mr. Rhodes remarked, would give officers increased superannuation benefits and enable thorn to draw considerably increased pensions. Ho believed that this would give general satisfaction and would remove a long-stand-ing grievance. A similar arrangement has been made as regards tho officers of tho Tourist Department. In regard to tho Post Office employees the maximum salary of linesmen and Post Office messengers has been increased from £170 to £180 per annum, and a further 225 officers will have their maximum salaries raised from £220 to £230 per annum.
